Sonos preps smaller networked speaker, the Play:3

Ever since Sonos released its S5 networked speaker, we've been asking company reps to put out a smaller, less-expensive version that's designed for spots like bathrooms, kitchens, or a bedroom nightstand. Well, it appears we may soon get our wish.

Dave Zatz of Zatznotfunny.com spotted the upcoming Sonos product on the FCC Web site, where it's referred to in branding material as the Play:3. In his post Zatz notes that the "3" may refer to the number of drivers in the speaker. The $399 S5 has five while the smaller Play:3 could … Read more

Anyone who's familiar with the Sonos Controller for iPhone will find the Android version to be all but identical, though the latter offers voice search--a nice upgrade over the iOS version. The Android app will no doubt be welcomed by Sonos owners (or prospective owners) who were looking for control options beyond the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Mac, and Windows software controllers that are currently available. But Sonos' Apple-centric fans also have two reasons to celebrate:… Read more

Mog music service to expand to cars, Sonos

Mog is planning to make a play for the car and home, the company announced today.

Next week at South By Southwest (SXSW), the company's CEO, David Hyman, will demonstrate Mog running in a Mini USA vehicle. The service, according to a brief statement from the company, will let users have "fast and easy access to unlimited music on demand from virtually anywhere."

Mog, which boasts more than 10 million tracks, offers customers two streaming services: a $5-per-month option, which provides access on a computer; and a $10-a-month service that lets users connect to Mog from mobile devices in addition to their PCs and other electronics.

Since Mog expects to reveal plans for the car service next week, details are slim. However, The New York Times is reporting that Mog's service will be preinstalled in Mini cars and will require subscribers to connect their smartphones to the in-car stereo. The built-in Mog service will use the smartphone's Web connection to access music, but the user interface will be on the in-car stereo and not on the user's smartphone, according to The Times. Mog hasn't revealed how it will handle pricing for in-car service.… Read more

Sonos Android app coming in March

When Sonos launched its iPhone app in 2008, it was a big deal for the company because it allowed iPhone and iPod Touch owners to buy a Sonos system without spending the extra dough on a $400 Sonos remote. That helped spur sales of the popular multiroom music wireless system, which is easy to set up without the help of a professional home installer.

Now the company hopes its new free Sonos Controller for Android app will attract a whole new batch of potential Sonos converts--or just please existing ones who happen to own Android-based smartphones.

Sonos Controller for Android, which will be available in late March as a free download from Android Market, is designed to work on any Android smartphone running Android 2.1 or later with a screen size of 320x480 (HVGA), 480x800 (WVGA), or 480x854 (WVGA). That includes most popular Android phones, such as the Motorola Droid X, Samsung Galaxy S series, and Evo 4G.

Currently, the app isn't officially supported on Android tablets, but Sonos reps said the app would potentially work on tablets but running in a smaller window. They didn't say when a true tablet version of the app would be available that would be similar to the one available for the iPad. … Read more
