Our utilities update report is a column on updates for Mac utilities that have been released in the past week. Though a utility can be any tool that helps you perform a routine task (including image manipulation and synchronization), our focus in this column is on bringing you those tools that help in troubleshooting Mac hardware and software problems. This past week there were only updates to two utilities: a popular OS tweaking and maintenance tool, and a file recovery tool.
After installing the 10.6.6 update and launching the new Mac App Store, a few people are noticing that the window for signing into the store seems to be missing. If Expose is activated, the window will be shown as being available, but when it is clicked the window will remain hidden.
Some have found that the main App Store window seems to be hiding the log-in window, and though it can be moved to reveal the log-in window, the window seems to be inactive and will not accept user input.
This problem appears to be associated with the … Read more
With 2010 coming to a close, it's time to look back at some of the greatest games to hit the iOS over the course of the year. I have many more favorites than I've listed in this slideshow, but I guess I have to make a cutoff somewhere. In any case, many factors have contributed to the iPhone becoming one of the greatest gaming platforms yet, and I think it will continue to get even better in 2011.
There's no question that the popularity of the iPhone made game developers see an opportunity to create something special … Read more
It seems like every fruit and vegetable has a little something that needs to be removed before we're ready to eat it. With peppers, it's the seeds. With kiwi, it's the skin. But the Fruit Scoops, from Progressive, have provided an easy way to handle those less-than-tasty parts. The scoops look like little more than a circle of nylon at the end of a stick, but they can scoop, slice, core and even create shapes from a variety of fruits and vegetables. The handles are stainless steel to provide a good grip, while the scoops are nylon … Read more
If you buy more than an apple or two at a time, slicing them up can turn into a bit of process. If you need enough slices for a house full of kids or you're planning to preserve some fruit, coring and slicing that bag of apples can become overwhelming. But the Adjustable Pit and Split from Progressive can make the whole situation simple again. This corer can handle a lot more fruit than just apples, too. The adjustable design can take the pits out of peaches and plums, core pears, and handle plenty of other fruit. Wash your … Read more
Fruit Ninja is a simple, but well-made game that challenges you to slice and dice fruit with a ninja sword as it flies onto your iPhone screen. The controls are extremely simple, requiring you to swipe your finger through a flying fruit as you would slice with a ninja sword. There are two game modes: Classic and Zen. In Classic you're challenged to slice fruit as it flies on screen while avoiding occasional bombs that will end the game immediately or allowing three fruits to drop below the bottom of the screen. In Zen mode you won't have … Read more
I'm sure I'm not alone in my anticipation of what Steve Jobs will announce on Monday at the Keynote for the WWDC. With that (the iPhone 4G or "HD") in mind, I've decided to make my iPhone apps post about games this week in the hope that we can all kill some time this weekend before the big event.
To start off, possibly my favorite iPhone game from 2009 went on sale today. Meteor Blitz (99 cents; usually $2.99) for iPhone is a fun and challenging classic arcade-style shooter where you use dual joysticks … Read more
If you're not yet familiar with the flavors of grilled fruit, you have something wonderful to look forward to. A grilled apple or a grilled peach can take the fruit's flavor to the next step. It hasn't always been easy to grill certain fruits--a peach can easily roll all over the grill--but the Fruit Grill Rack makes the process significantly easier. The stainless steel rack is shaped so that each piece of fruit is held in place just over the grill, getting the full effect of the heat but with a more stable base. In particular, it … Read more
Pro Reels Haunted House offers a simple slot machine game with some spooky surprises. While its controls could have been improved, this game is a fun diversion for those who like gambling with imaginary money.
The program's interface was a mixed bag. While it was stunningly professional-looking, with its cartoon graphics and haunted house theme, its controls demanded a visit to the Help file's brief instructions because we'd have been lost without them. We were disappointed to find that we needed to use the F1 and F4 keys, which felt primitive and didn't inspire confidence. However, … Read more
One of my favorite parts about summer is eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Although these kinds of things are available year round, the nicer weather makes my local produce market a destination on my days off.
The tricky part about buying an abundance of fruits and veggies is eating them before they rot, and the biggest offender of preemptive over-ripening in my fruit bowl is the banana. Whether I buy organic or conventional, there is inevitably at least one in the bunch that transitions into the brown speckled mess that ends up becoming banana bread.
I'm not saying that … Read more
