There's no denying the Beats by Dre Studio's success, and how it so radically changed the headphone landscape. No other headphone manufacturer could have imagined that it could sell millions of $300 headphones to non-audiophiles. Before Beats those buyers were content with cheap and utterly disposable headphones, headphones that all too often would stop working in a few months, get thrown away, and get replaced with another set of cheap headphones. Of course, those cheap headphones sounded pretty bad, so moving up to the Studio meant the sound was a revelation! Bass, dynamics, and treble detailing were so … Read more
Beats Electronics is once again a completely free company.
HTC announced Friday that it has sold off its remaining 25 percent stake in Beats Electronics for $265 million. The move comes after HTC sold back the other half of its stake in Beats for $150 million.
Things sounded much different two years ago. HTC acquired a 50.1 percent stake in Beats in 2011 with plans to incorporate its audio technology into HTC products. Although it did so, neither HTC nor Beats seemed all that pleased to be working together, leading to rumors that the audio company, started by rapper … Read more
Last year I had the chance to interview Luke Wood, the boss of Beats headphones, about the bass-heavy company's meteoric rise to prominence -- a fashion-focused bombardment that left traditional audio companies struggling to keep pace. This year, at the IFA trade show in Berlin, Daniel Sennheiser of German firm Sennheiser is having his say.
Sennheiser is one of the many manufacturers caught off guard by the popularity of Beats' celebrity-endorsed fashion 'phones. I wanted to know how the company was coping with the competition, and the challenges of selling headphones in a post-Beats world.'Beats has taken away … Read more
HP revealed a pair of modestly priced 23-inch HD monitors: a Windows 8-certified touch-screen and a Beats Audio-boasting display. The two new models feature a 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution, 178-degree viewing angles, and purported 100,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
The HP Pavilion 23tm Touch Monitor and HP Envy 23 are competitively priced for their average spec offerings, but the bargain comes at the cost of few ergonomic features and limited connectivity.

Celebrities can't all be Dr. Dre. His Beats by Dre line of headphones has managed to be accepted with a minimal amount of ridicule, thanks in part to the relatively sedate designs. Many celebrity-branded gadgets, however, completely bypass any attempt at practicality and leap straight into a big vat of absurdity.
Celebrities seem to be especially attracted to headphones, probably because they're relatively simple and stand out when you wear them. Consider the new Snooki Couture line, for example. Among the zebra-print earbuds and rhinestone phone accessories, there's a leopard-print headband headphone set with a big cat bow on top. I want to wash my retinas out with soap.… Read more
Irregular and sometimes life-threatening heart rhythms -- called arrhythmias -- are able to be treated thanks to electric jolts in defibrillators and pacemakers, but those jolts aren't completely without risk. Not only can they be painful, but in some instances they can even damage tissue.
And while most people would probably put up with a little pain if it means saving their lives, five biomedical engineers at Johns Hopkins and Stony Brook universities figured they'd work on improving the system to see if these devices would work just as well without the jolts of electricity.
Instead, they want … Read more
Beats Electronics, the company behind the wildly popular Beats headphones, is looking to get rid of its minority owner.
The company, which is headed up by music bigshot Jimmy Iovine and rap legend Dr. Dre, is holding talks with an investor to raise cash through debt financing and an equity offering to buy out HTC's stake in its operation, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing people who claim to have knowledge of the company's plans.
In the vision of BioBeats CEO Nadeem Kassam, medical research shouldn't be restricted to a lab. Rather, it should be something that takes place in real time around the world, using readily available technology like smartphones -- and that gets participants involved through entertainment.
That's one of the ideas behind this self-described "big-data mobile-health company," which announced a $650,000 funding round Thursday, with investors as diverse as rapper-turned-film-star Will Smith and mobile software firm Eniac Ventures. … Read more
