How to do a barrel roll in a Chevrolet Sonic

I shouldn't have to say this, but don't try this at home.

Pro-skater-cum-stunt-driver Rob Dyrdek became the first person to ever kickflip a car at a skateboarding-themed event at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, Calif.

In the world of skateboarding, a kickflip involves the leaping into the air while simultaneously flipping the board through a 360-degree barrel roll beneath you and, of course, landing safely. In the world of automotive stunt driving, a kickflip involves driving a stunt-prepped Chevrolet Sonic hatchback over a corkscrew ramp at high speed, then praying to your deity of choice as the car flies over a comically sized skateboard prop. I won't spoil much more of the video embedded below, but suffice it to say that even Dyrdek looks surprised at the end of this stunt.… Read more

SwissRoomBox turns car into camper

Per the video, couples can use the SwissRoomBox to shower and have pillow fights.

The Swiss took a simple pocket knife and made it open bottles, burn ants with a magnifying glass, and saw down trees. So we are not terribly surprised to see the SwissRoomBox. Its red-painted sides conceal a stove, sink, shower, table, and bed, and it can be fit into different types of cars.

This promotional video shows a couple on a splendid car camping adventure somewhere in the European countryside, taking advantage of the many uses of the SwissRoomBox, and proving that the Swiss do, in fact, wear leather underwear. … Read more

Lacking the power of the Juke-R, but the Juke Nismo might see production.

Nissan plans to expand its high performance line of vehicles, and it's targeting the crossover market to do it. The auto manufacturer unveiled the Juke Nismo Concept at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, announcing that the crossover could get the green light if it proves popular.

The Nissan Juke Nismo concept is a toned-down version of the Juke-R exercise the manufacturer has been promoting through a series of online videos. While the Juke-R borrows the heart and soul of the GT-R to become a compact SUV … Read more

Chevrolet invests in greenhouse energy conversion

Chevrolet revealed more details regarding one of 16 new "green" projects the company is funding. Chevrolet is helping Metrolina Greenhouses, in Huntersville, N.C., convert its heat source from natural gas to renewable biomass, the company said in a press release.

Metrolina Greenhouses is a 6.1-million-square-foot facility--the equivalent of 120 football fields--and is now expected to burn 36,000 tons of waste wood from land clearing each year as a heating source.

The heat-source conversion project is part of a five-year, $40 million investment funded by Chevrolet.

"As a large-scale operation delivering approximately 70 million plants … Read more

2011 Frankfurt auto show: 2013 Hyundai i30

Hyundai is clearly done being that car you don't know the name of.

For a long time, Hyundai cars were sort of bland, and when you did get close enough to read the name, you then recoiled at its reputation. This new i30 is a stylish crossover that shows the Korean car maker is not only interested in competing but also stomping out the embers of its ugly past.

2011 Frankfurt auto show: Kia GT concept

Not the most imaginatively named car, but to our eyes another handsome step forward for Kia.

Sleek, stylish, and sporty are not the type of words you would use to describe a Kia, but the Korean automaker wants you to think about those things, especially in this sedan concept called the GT at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show.

2011 Frankfurt auto show: Ford EVOS concept

The Ford EVOS concept is part of what they mean by "rolling consumer electronics".

This is currently Ford's most important concept car, the one that looks far forward and envisions styling, power and cabin technology innovations the company may bet its brand on. From another carmaker it might be dismissed as car show puffery, but Ford has a pretty good track record lately of putting innovative cars in showrooms. Brian Cooley shows you want the EVOS telegraphs.
