Amimon demos WHDI connectivity's full potential

LAS VEGAS--Amimon, which is the strongest supporter of the Wireless Home Digital Interface display standard and announced the Asus WAVI earlier this week, demoed at CES 2011 a variety of solutions through which WHDI-enabled devices could potentially change the way we interact with indoor entertainment.

Similar to Intel's WiDi and Sibeam's WirelessHD, WHDI is a technology that allows devices to connect to a HDMI TV wirelessly and transmit audio and video at full HD quality (1080p). The strength of WHDI is the fact that it has almost no latency and, therefore, other than high-def movies, enables interactive applications, … Read more

CES: Samsung's 4G Galaxy Tab revealed

LAS VEGAS--On Wednesday, Samsung announced a Wi-Fi version of the Galaxy Tab, but apparently it thinks we can't get enough Galaxy Tab news. It's probably right.

On Thursday the company, along with Verizon Wireless, announced the 4G LTE-enabled Galaxy Tab.

Unlike the Wi-Fi-only Tab, this one gets a significant upgrade in at least a couple of areas. Samsung will upgrade the rear-facing camera from 3 to 5 megapixels.

Also, the CPU gets a slight speed boost, from 1GHz to 1.2GHz, using the same Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor.

Besides those details, the rest of the specs (so far) … Read more

Sibeam's 60GHz-based WirelessHD widely adopted

LAS VEGAS--In the world of wireless display technology, so far we have WHDI with the Asus Wavi, and Intel's WiDi with the Netgear Push2TV or the D-Link MainStage. All of these devices allow for displaying high-quality audio and video from your laptop, desktop, or even a media player to a TV, wirelessly.

Now, however, if you want the devices to share more than just an audio and a video signal, but also data or the connection to the Internet, you'll want to consider a third technology, called WirelessHD, which uses the 60GHz frequency band.

Unlike WHDI or WiDI, … Read more

CES: Sharp Galapagos coming to America in 2011

LAS VEGAS--Like seemingly every other company at CES 2011, Sharp is jumping on the tablet/e-reader bandwagon. But at least the company has one of the more unique names out there: Galapagos.

If the name sounds familiar (in the electronics arena, that is), it's because it's not exactly a new product. The Galapagos is already available in Japan, and it's been spotted making its way through the FCC approval process in the U.S.

But one thing is clear: the North American version of the Galapagos may bear very little resemblance to the existing Japanese one. For … Read more

CES: Iriver opens chapter on high-resolution 6-inch e-reader, the Story HD

Last year at CES, Iriver showed off its first e-reader, the Story. It didn't make much of a dent in the marketplace, but this year the company's come back with the Story HD, a new e-ink-based product that it's calling the world's "highest-resolution 6-inch e-reader."

Iriver says the Story HD, which sports an electronic paper display made by LG, offers XGA (768x1,024) resolution and has 63.8 percent more pixels and faster page turn, thanks to an advanced processor from Freescale Semiconductor based on ARM Cortex technology. It also has built-in Wi-Fi and … Read more

CES: D-Link joins WiDi wireless display crowd

LAS VEGAS--You've heard of Netgear's new Push2TV HD--now there's competition.

D-Link announced at CES 2011 that it supports Intel's Wireless Display technology, known as WiDi, with a first product called the MainStage.

Like all WiDi-based accessories, the MainStage allows people to instantly display a laptop's (and even some desktops') screen on the big TV.

Supporting the next generation of WiDi, the MainStage is very similar to Netgear's Push2TV HD. According to Daniel Kelly, D-Link associate vice president of marketing, the reason D-Link waited until now to support WiDi is because this technology is … Read more
