Transpacific undersea cable completed

A crucial undersea fiber-optic cable that will provide more Internet capacity between the U.S. and China was completed Monday, according to news reports.

Six of the world's largest phone companies have finished building an 18,000-kilometer "Trans-Pacific Express" cable that will link the U.S., China, South Korea, and Taiwan, according to the Dow Jones news service.

Verizon: Put the brakes on broadband monitoring

Start-up NebuAd had hoped to build a business on monitoring broadband customers' Web browsing and delivering relevant ads. Then its partners began dropping out, its chief executive resigned, and earlier this month the company suspended its business plan.

Never let it be said that politicians are quick on the uptake. The Senate Commerce Committee nevertheless is holding a hearing on Thursday morning to investigate the NebuAd-ish privacy practices of broadband providers. (Who, remember, aren't using NebuAd.)

Verizon Wireless is taking a bit of pleasure over AT&T's continuing troubles with the Apple iPhone. Ever since the first reports of 3G reception problems, limited battery life, and dropped calls, Verizon's media relations arm has been highlighting the issues in e-mails to reporters.

Verizon Wireless adds month-to-month option

Verizon Wireless is offering cell phone subscribers the chance to go month-to-month with their cell phone service without signing a pesky contract.

The second largest wireless operator in the U.S. announced Monday that it will offer month-to-month service for all its current wireless plans. Monthly subscribers will pay the same rates as those with long-term contracts, but month-to-month customers won't be required to sign contracts.
