Top 10 tempting iPod accessories

Despite the fact that I finally caved and purchased a second-gen iPod Touch, history will tell you that I'm no iPod fangirl. Still, one thing the iPod has going for it that no other MP3 player can match is a seemingly endless array of third-party add-ons.

There are hordes of cases; gaggles of speakers; and a shocking supply of docks, recorders, FM transmitters, and other feature-adding devices...not to mention all those apps for the Touch and the iPhone.

Over the past several years, there have been a number of iPod accessories that tempted me to bow to the … Read more

Late night comfort clock

Night Stand is a free app that makes the screen on your iPhone or iPod Touch look like a classic, late '70s/early '80s LED clock. If you keep your device plugged in or docked near your bed, this can be a fun and easy way to have a bedside clock that can also play songs from your iTunes playlists (via iPod playback). Night Stand comes with three themes (red, green, and blue), vertical and horizontal mode, and options for displaying seconds and days of the week. Battery consumption is relatively modest, but you'll want to keep your device … Read more

Tornado-detecting dual-iPhone alarm clock

Taking a page from the boombox trend of the 1980s, iPod-docking alarm clocks are taking on an absurd amount of features in an effort to stand out from the herd. Case in point: the iLuv iMM183, a dual-dock alarm clock capable of charging two iPhones or iPods. This little bedside beauty comes with a remote control, FM radio, EQ control, aux input, and last but not least--an NOAA emergency alert system with localized weather warnings.

Aside from the emergency/weather alert display, you're basically looking at the same iLuv iMM173 we saw last year. Still, the list of … Read more

iPhone apps of the week

Before we get to this week's apps, I ran into a problem recently with my iPhone that I was able to quickly fix after a little online research. I had recently synced my iPhone only to find that most of my music was gone. When I got home and plugged in to my computer I saw that most of my storage space was taken up by "Other." Only about a third was music, about 900MB for apps (you better believe it!), and some smallish amount for photos. But more than half of the storage space out of … Read more

Big Clock Pro doesn't skimp on options

Despite the simplicity of this attractive desktop clock, it offers a surprisingly long list of customization features.

Big Clock Pro places a large analog clock on your desktop. By default, the clock was large enough that it consumed most of our screen, but we found it appealing and professionally designed. You can access its features by right-clicking on the taskbar icon. You have options to cut the clock size in half, adjust its translucency, keep it on top, and select its desktop placement. It's a simple click and drag to place the clock where you like. The clock also … Read more

Hanging alarm clock does a spider act

If you never grew up with the childhood song "Eensy Weensy Spider," it's about the peekaboo adventures of a spider as it ascends, descends, and ascends yet again along the water spout.

Well, the $29.10 Hanging Alarm Clock seems to have spun a Web around the same nursery rhyme, only with more ominous overtures that recall the monster spider Shelob that almost made a meal of Frodo in Fellowship of the Ring.

The cunning orb is suspended from the ceiling on a 12-inch cable, which immediately starts to retract the clock upward once the alarm goes … Read more

iLuv debuts $200 Wi-Fi clock radio

Earlier in 2008, iLuv made news with its release of the i168, one of the most affordable tabletop HD Radios to date (currently available for less than $100). Now the company is turning its sights toward online audio with the iNT170. The bedside clock radio employs the same chassis as the i168, but it offers thousands of streaming Internet radio stations (via your home wired or Wi-Fi network) instead of HD Radio. The dual alarms can be set to wake to an Internet station, over-the-air FM, or a buzzer, and the unit offers 40 presets--20 for FM, 20 for Net … Read more

Logitech Pure-Fi iPod speakers: What's the best option?

Logitech's line of Pure-Fi iPod speaker docks has swelled to six, and CNET's reviewed pretty much every one. Some of the models have very similar features and price points, so it seemed like a perfect candidate for a cheat sheet:

*The Pure-Fi Anywhere 2 is not yet reviewed, but it's pretty much identical to the original Pure-Fi Anywhere, but with the addition of iPhone shielding. **The Pure-Fi Express isn't yet reviewed, but it's effectively a renamed version of the older AudioStation Express.

Basically, go with the Elite if you want the best sound quality--we still … Read more
