Kindle DX shipping June 10

Amazon.com says its Kindle DX e-book reader will start shipping on June 10. "The Kindle DX is currently available for pre-order and all orders are prioritized on a first come, first served basis," the company said Monday in a statement.

Not to much to add at this point other than we'll post a review on the 10th. In the meantime, you can check out our lengthy first take of the jumbo-screen e-reader.

Has anybody ordered one yet--or thought about buying one? Or is the DX just too pricey at $489?

Requires remote assistance

This supposedly free program quickly scans your PC to find any problems that might put you at risk. We found it ironic that PC Health Check set off our spyware program during install and then proceeded to add numerous program links without permission. We weren't all that impressed by its capabilities, either.

Strong and social

Skyfire has arrived at its first full release with a fairly fast and solid mobile browser offering. From a usability standpoint, its streaming video and social bent are Skyfire's strengths. Small, but significant navigation holes are drawbacks in what is an otherwise stable and serious effort.

The Start screen is characterized by a customizable RSS feed. You can sort by filters, and post article links to Facebook and Twitter. Delicious Dell Cupcake...(Android Cupcake, that is)

Care for a Dell Cupcake? We knew you would. Credit to Dell for not only listening to reader suggestions, but for doing their own video hacking. Mac OSX 10.5.7: Better for Hackintoshed Netbooks?

Although Apple doesn't have any clear Netbook plans on the horizon, that hasn't exactly stopped anyone from getting their own Apple Netbook the hacky way. Hackintoshes, i.e. PCs with Mac software loaded on them, hadn't truly started stealing the spotlight until the Netbook phenomenon. For as little as $300 and a copy of Leopard, you too could have the sort of ultraportable that Jobs and Co. would only sneer at.

The downside, besides no official hardware support from Apple, has been battery life, an area where OS X hasn't exactly been Netbook-friendly.

Crippled by Apple

After some hiccups in the development process, Sling Media has finally released SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone. The software works with your Slingbox at home, and lets you control and watch your satellite or cable box and DVR from your iPhone or iPod Touch. As with SlingPlayer Mobile on other platforms, you'll have access to a menu bar that'll let you use a remote-like interface to control your Slingbox, as well as switch among Sling devices and manage your favorite channels. What's new are a few gestures that allow you to scroll through your favorite channels.
