SplashCast and NPR do podcast player, Facebook app

NPR lovers looking to listen to public radio while at work, or while social networking have a new way to get their fix on demand. NPR and SplashCast have come together with a new player that contains 12 of NPR's audio podcasts including Car Talk, Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!, and Fresh Air. The player will continue to be updated with any new additions to NPR's podcasting lineup.

NPR is also launching a Facebook version of the player that users can listen to as standalone app, or embed it on their profiles to share with others.

This is the latest move from Splashcast in providing branded channels. Last week they launched branded players for number of popular entertainment and recording artists, along with a new platform for creating your own branded player on Facebook. The goal is to give content creators a means to distribute their content, while providing a bit more customization than YouTube or Google Video can offer.

I'm still a fan of subscribing to the shows that I like via iTunes and listening to them at my leisure. But for those that can't, this is an easier solution than digging through NPR's directory. I've embedded the new player after the break. To see it, just click the "Read More" link below.… Read more

PowerPoint presentations speak with SlideShare

SlideShare, which lets you share PowerPoint presentations with the world, today added the capability to match audio tracks to slide shows. This is a cool feature that podcasters could exploit to show and tell a story at the same time. Professors, marketers, and other storytellers might give this free tool a whirl to provide remote access to their work instead of using software such as Adobe Captivate or TechSmith Camtasia. You could even use Slideshare to narrate a PowerPoint-based photo gallery of your vacation. Come to think of it, why don't more photo-sharing sites follow Zooomr's lead (more here) … Read more

Life without Office

On our weekly Real Deal podcast yesterday, Tom and I covered Microsoft Office replacements. It turns out Tom is a day-to-day user of Open Office. I'm impressed. I know a lot of people who talk up the benefits of the free suite, but few people who've actually committed to it.

I mostly still use Office. When I want to collaborate with someone on a document I'll use Google Docs and Spreadsheets. I've dabbled in Zoho and ThinkFree, and other interesting online office apps like EditGrid (spreadsheet) but nothing has torn me away from Microsoft's suite … Read more

CNET Live is now a podcast!

Since we launched the show CNET Live, many many folks have asked us how to get old episodes. We've also been asked if we could make it into a podcast.

Well both questions can now be answered yes.

Old episodes of CNET Live can be found in the CNET TV archives at CNETTV.com. Just search for "cnet live".

CNET Live podcast

But we're most excited about the CNET Live podcast, which can now be found as an RSS feed, as well as in iTunes. Just go to CNET's podcast central, and scroll down until … Read more

Crave got a sweet ride

What costs $375,000, draws points and stares wherever it goes, and has carpet made of 100 percent pure panda*? It's the 2007 Rolls-Royce Phantom, and it's our ride for this week's Crave!

We run the gamut today from D.I.Y to totally pimped-out (plasma-screen stairway, anyone?). Donald has also posted his slide show and more info about the Little Professor MP3 player.

Thanks to Wayne Cunningham again for being our chauffeur for the afternoon! I knew that parallel park-off champion title would be good for something!

*Not actually panda at all, but it sure felt … Read more

Crave featured on iPhone video

Someone with a very sharp eye noticed that Crave was shown in the "Activation and Sync" tutorial video on Apple.com for the iPhone. We're there in the good company of NPR, the Food Network, National Geographic, and the New York Times. They don't show the actual podcast on the iPhone, but someone over there is a fan!

A neat, little video shout-out, to be sure. I guess we didn't get on Apple's bad side too much with the iPod Challenge!

HeyCast: Put YouTube on your iPod

HeyCast is a new service from the folks that made HeyWatch [review], the online video conversion service. It lets you grab videos from popular hosting sites such as YouTube, Google Video, and Apple's Quicktime movie trailers site, and clump them together into a handy RSS feed you or anyone else can subscribe to in iTunes or other feed readers. The feed isn't just your standard RSS though--HeyCast grabs the Flash videos, converts them, and makes them available for offline viewing on your computer or portable devices.

I gave it a go this morning and came across a few … Read more

Jobs and Gates act now a podcast

If you didn't catch the Steve and Bill show at the D5 conference in Southern California last week, Apple has posted the full hour and a half discussion on iTunes. The rare joint appearance between the Microsoft chairman and the Apple chief has risen to the top of the podcast charts on iTunes.

It's available in both audio and video, though the latter weighs in at almost a gigabyte (my copy is still downloading as I blog this). Unlike the high-end conference, the podcast is free. Of course, it doesn't come with the nifty swag bags that … Read more

Crave: Shoot your TV!

The nonwinner of the Parallel Park-Off (I hate calling him a loser), Kevin Massy, is with me today to talk about some gadgets that we covet this week on Crave. He shows off the Sharp Shootin' Remote Control, and viewer Juergen sends in an MP3 player for making your bath time all the more exciting!

But that's not all! We also included some outtakes from my trip to LA for the Star Wars convention, celebrating 30 years since the first movie was released! Smartly, I did not let it slip that I prefer Star Trek.

Download the Crave vodcast RSS feed, … Read more
