Get a $20 Skype credit and 1-month Netflix trial for free

A couple quick housekeeping notes:

The recent SiriusXM freebie proved disappointing for a lot of folks. Some couldn't sign up at all, others received a confirmation e-mail for the one-year trial -- only to be informed a week later that the trial had ended.

As I noted in my original post, that deal was probably intended for Chevy customers, not the general public. The standard SiriusXM Internet Radio trial is 30 days, so it's not surprising the company quickly clamped down on what was meant to be an exclusive offer. That said, I feel like they should have … Read more

Amazon once offered to buy Netflix for $12 million, book says

Jeff Bezos might have saved his company some money -- and a lot of trouble -- had he not tried to lowball Netflix back in 1999.

According to "Netflixed," a history of the DVD-and-streaming pioneer that's due to go on sale Thursday, founders Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph met with the Amazon CEO in 1999, after he indicated he might want to partner with Netflix in some way.

"Hastings also wanted to discuss selling Netflix to Amazon if the price was right," writes Gina Keating, the former Reuters reporter who authored the book. The only … Read more

Dish won't turn Blockbuster into a Netflix competitor

So much for the rebirth of Blockbuster as a Netflix competitor.

Bloomberg reports that billionaire Charlie Ergen, founder and chairman of the Dish Network, has abandoned his effort to revive the onetime video-rental powerhouse. The original plan was to take Blockbuster retail locations and use them to sell Dish mobile devices, which could in turn be used to stream movies.

But U.S. regulators wouldn't grant immediate approval to a waiver that would allow Dish to transmit data and voice over its satellite spectrum, and Ergen decided to give up on the effort.

It's unclear what Dish will … Read more

'House of Cards' to premier on Netflix in February

Netflix will premiere its first original TV series "House of Cards" on February 1, the company announced today. In a twist, the company will release all 13 episodes at once instead of parceling them out the way broadcast and cable channels do.

The show -- which stars Kevin Spacey ("Horrible Bosses," "American Beauty") and Robin Wright ("The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "Forrest Gump") -- was produced exclusively for Netflix.

"House of Cards," based on a BBC miniseries of the same name, is a look at "uncompromising … Read more

Zuckerberg wants everything to connect through Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg has offered some hints about what could be in store for Facebook's future, saying he sees an opportunity to be the "infrastructure" for various other services now that the site has hit the 1 billion active user mark.

Zuckerberg, speaking in a Q&A with Bloomberg Business published today, said Facebook's user base is now large enough that the majority of customers at other sites -- like Skype or Netflix -- are likely also using Facebook. That means those large-scale services can now rely on Facebook as a "piece of critical infrastructure … Read more

'Netflixed' author talks Hastings' glory, hubris, white lies (Q&A)

By now, most techies know the celebrated story of how Netflix vanquished Blockbuster to kill off the late fee, usher in streaming distribution, and lay waste to traditional video rentals.

But "Netflixed," a book coming out next week, aims to set the record straight about how the company seized supreme power in online video rentals and who was responsible for that success, as well as offer clues to where the company may be headed.

Gina Keating, the book's author and a former reporter for Reuters, spent two years researching the project, which offers an insider's view … Read more

Redbox goes box office with event ticketing

You soon may be able to buy tickets at the same place you rent your DVDs.

Redbox, the provider of DVD-rental kiosks, said today that it's now selling tickets to Philadelphia events. The service is available today at certain Philly-area kiosks and online and will roll out to the more than 650 kiosks in that market by mid-October.

Redbox's biggest selling point is that all tickets -- including those to concerts, sports events, and cultural attractions -- will be sold at or below face value, and it's only charging a $1 fee per ticket. That's much … Read more

Netflix makes 'Just for Kids' iPad friendly

The name of the game this morning seems to be kids.

First, Netflix started the day off by announcing that the "Just for Kids" feature available at the video streaming service is now offered as a mobile app on the iPad.

The way it works is a child can click on the "Just for Kids" tab in the new iPad app and "find their favorite shows and movies by swiping through a row of their favorite characters, many of which they will instantly recognize." Netflix said the app is available on the iPad 2 … Read more
