Sony Ericsson W980 Walkman phone

Sony Ericsson kicked off the GSMA World Congress by sneaking in a press conference the day before the show actually began. Held at a cramped but painfully hip studio far off the Barcelona tourist trail, the event included an solidly international audience and some of the most interesting appetizers I've ever seen (squid Catalan style anyone?).

But I digress, because I'm sure you just care about the phones. Sony Ericsson's announcements solidly illustrate its GSMA themes of music, imaging, and the Web. First to hit the stage was the Sony Ericsson W980. As a Walkman phone, it … Read more

Web in a clamshell: Sony Ericsson Z770 debuts

Sony Ericsson unleashed a platoon of cell phones and smartphones at GSMA 2008 tonight, including this sleek number, the Sony Ericsson Z770. The clamshell phone is as slim as can be but the handset manufacturer doesn't want its size to fool you. The Z770 is optimized for Web surfing with HSDPA data speeds and has a snazzy browser that features a mouselike cursor for easier navigation. In addition, there's support for RSS feeds and widgets. E-mail is also a key feature, whether you just need to access your Web accounts such as Yahoo and Hotmail, or hook it … Read more

Hands on with the Samsung Soul

You'd be forgiven if you thought for a moment that the new Samsung Soul was the only cell phone on display at GSMA in Barcelona. Indeed, Samsung Electronics has peppered the city with countless signs promoting its slick new handset. And in its press release, Samsung called the Soul its "flagship product" for 2008.

As my CNET UK colleague Andrew Lim said on Friday, the Soul (aka the SGH-U900) is the newest edition to Samsung's Ultra Edition line. Sporting an all-metal silver casing and measuring just half an inch thick, the Soul has a decidedly sleek … Read more

How to survive in Barcelona on zero euros a day

Well, I made it to Barcelona for GSMA (formerly 3GSM), and the excitement, my friends, has already begun. As my colleague Kent German described earlier, Fira de Barcelona is abuzz with activity in preparation for the world's largest mobile phone show; however, my news comes from outside the wireless world. You see, I got my wallet stolen today. I've spent the better half of the afternoon calling my credit card companies, and shuttling between local police stations. On Monday, I'll get a nice look at the U.S. Embassy. I've been really lucky to travel quite … Read more

GSMA begins in Barcelona

We told you that were going to the GSMA World Congress (formerly known as 3GSM), and now we have arrived. After a long flight from San Francisco, and a layover somewhere in Germany, I landed in Barcelona ready for a long sleep. After recharging myself, and my gadgets (good thing I remembered those electrical adapters), I took off for a walk to see the sights. Though GSMA doesn't begin until Monday, the city is already buzzing with thousands of visitors. As the largest mobile show in the world, GSMA has completely taken over the city. Indeed, when I checked … Read more

ARM plans Android demonstration at MWC

ARM plans to demonstrate prototype phones based on ARM processors and Google's Android operating system next week, possibly paving the way for the chip designer to join Google's Open Handset Alliance.

It won't be the first Android prototype to get a public airing, but this one will come on one of the biggest stages of the year for the mobile-phone industry. An ARM representative distributed invitations Wednesday to come see and play with the Android prototypes next week in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress.

ARM's technology is found at the heart of almost every mobile … Read more

Barcelona or bust: GSMA Mobile World Congress preview

On February 11, thousands from around the world will converge in Barcelona, Spain, for the annual GSMA Mobile World Congress (formerly known as the 3GSM Mobile World Congress). The four-day show brings together the cell phone industry to discuss and showcase the latest GSM technologies and developments. This year Senior Editor Kent German and I, along with CNET News.com's Maggie Reardon, CNET UK's Andrew Lim, and CNET TV's Ariel Nunez, have the fortune of traveling to Barcelona to cover the show so that we can bring you the latest news through blogs, pictures, and videos.

More Samsung phones at 3GSM

At technology trade shows, Samsung has a history of going all out. While most manufacturers introduce maybe five phones tops, Samsung usually unveils double that number. And as 3GSM closes this week in Barcelona, Samsung again showed that it thinks "less is more" is just plain rubbish. We showed you six new models earlier in the week, and now here are five more fresh out of the Samsung labs.

Designwise, the SGH-P110 is the most interesting of the bunch. Though we were just about to sound the death knell for swivel phones, Samsung attempts this unique swivel-flip design. … Read more

T-Mobile named U.S. carrier for Nokia 5300 XpressMusic

Originally announced back in September, the Nokia 5300 XpressMusic phone was only available Stateside if you bought an unlocked version for well over $300. T-Mobile is going to announce Wednesday at 3GSM that starting February 28, the carrier will sell it for $99 and a two-year contract.

It's a good price for a phone that CNET Reviews was pretty impressed by: it's a GSM/GPRS/EDGE slider phone with Bluetooth support, has a 1 GB SD card slot, 1.3-megapixel camera, standard 2.5-millimeter headset jack and an adapter for the headphones of your choice. That way you … Read more

Crave tackles 3GSM

The annual 3GSM cell phone extravaganza is under way in Barcelona this week, and though Crave isn't in sunny Spain, we've been blogging away to bring you the top news from the show.

Smart phone diva Bonnie Cha waded through a ton of smart phone news to deliver info on the new RIM BlackBerry 8800, a trio of new Nokia E series smart phones, the Nokia 6110 Navigator, and the long-awaited GSM Motorola Q. Cha also covered the HTC Vox (and accurately pointed out its lack of 3G), the Nokia N77, and the I-Mate Jaq3.
