Dell updates its highest-end XPS system

We've given Dell a hard time in the past for not keeping its alleged gaming rigs up to date, but the new XPS 720 H2C looks once again like the real deal. We say "once again" because the original 710 model won an Editors' Choice award back in January. With this new version, Dell addressed many of the complaints we had about the first model, and even expanded on some features. We don't want to crown anything before getting our hands on it, but on paper the 720 looks tough to beat. It costs $6,000 (… Read more

Dell's Ubuntu PCs available Thursday?

Several sources are reporting that Dell's previously announced Linux-based PCs will be available Thursday, though Dell is keeping mum.

Blogger Jeremy Garcia says on his blog that a Dell employee e-mailed him to say that the Ubuntu Linux OS will be available pre-installed on the E520 model desktop, XPS 410 gaming desktop, and 1505 model laptop, starting Thursday.

Garcia doesn't name his source, and Dell is not talking. Spokesman Kent Cook said he could not confirm models, dates or availability of the forthcoming Ubuntu PCs. He did say that the release is still on track for the "… Read more

Dell confirms rumors, will build tablet PC

Dell confirmed Friday that it will sell a tablet PC before the end of year.

Jeff Clarke, senior vice president and general manager of Dell's business product group, made the announcement in a short video posted to the company's Direct2Dell blog.

"I'm here to end much speculation in the industry about our plans in the tablet marketplace," says a casually attired Clarke, while holding the tablet. The device will be a Latitude tablet PC designed specifically for the education, health care and corporate markets, he said.

On the video, Clarke gives a brief demo and … Read more

Dell appoints new chief accounting executive

In the midst of a federal investigation into its accounting practices, Dell has appointed a new chief accounting officer, Thomas Sweet.

Sweet, formerly Dell's vice president of finance for the public sector, succeeds Joan Hooper in the role. Hooper's new title is vice president of finance for the Americas region.

A Dell representative called Hooper's new assignment part of the company's rotation of executives and a "restructuring of its global finance leadership team," and would not comment on whether the move is related to the current Securities and Exchange Commission investigation into the company'… Read more

Photos: Dell's next-generation products

Dell is trying to turn things around since losing its lead as the world's No. 1 PC maker to Hewlett-Packard and reorganizing its leadership team. As a result, it's holding sessions with the media to show off what it says are its most innovative new products. One of them is pictured here: a super-thin display with speakers and microphone integrated right into the display itself. Dell says this could be the future of computer monitors. Dell changes its sales strategy

To hear Michael Dell tell it, you can expect to see Dell computers popping up everywhere for sale.

Dell, which has relied on direct sales for years, is about to launch a major push in commercial reseller and retail channels, the company's CEO told the Web site CRN. Dell had flirted with retail before, but it had no specific programs like training and technical support special offers to offer resellers. Dell will begin providing many programs and strategies to help resellers move the Round Rock, Texas, company's products, the article reported.

N.Y. attorney general accuses Dell of fraud

Dell is being sued by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for making false promises to customers to drive sales, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday evening.

A court filing accuses Dell and Dell Financial Services of fraud, false advertising and deceptive business practices, including offering misleading financing, and failing to honor rebates, warranties and service contracts.

The state of New York is asking for an injunction of Dell's allegedly bad business practices and an order that the world's second-largest PC maker pay an unspecified amount of damages to customers found to be affected.

Dell on display in Smithsonian

To be clear, that's a Dell computer, not Michael Dell now on display in the halls of the Smithsonian.

Dell, who earlier this year was reinstalled as CEO of the company he founded, donated his employee badge, a new Dell PC, and an original computer from PC Limited (Dell's original brand) made in 1985 to the National Air and Space Museum. The collection of items opened Thursday in Washington, D.C., as part of a temporary exhibit called "Treasures of American History."
