Netscape veterans Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz have thrown their financial support behind Qik, a mobile live-video service.
Qik's investment announcement on Tuesday comes roughly a month after the company debuted its public beta, with several new features designed to improve the service that allows people to stream live video from their cell phones onto the Internet, to such sites as YouTube, Mogulus, MySpace, Orkut, and Justin.tv.
Andreessen and Horowitz will also serve as board advisers on Qik.
"We are thrilled to have Marc and Ben involved in Qik, both as investors and advisers," Ramu Sunkara, … Read more
We recently tested the network media capabilities of Sony's KDL-46Z4100 flat-panel LCD, and frankly there's not much to look at save for a slide show of colorful photography. Unlike other media-rich televisions we've covered in the past, such as the Pioneer's PDP-5020FD and the Samsung LN46A750, the Sony only supports the streaming of JPEG photos, not music or video, over an Ethernet connection.… Read more
The National Basketball Association plans to break a new barrier for U.S. sports leagues by streaming live games to local markets on the Web.
According to a story published Monday by the Sports Business Journal, the NBA plans to negotiate contracts for its member teams so they can stream live games to targeted local online audiences this fall. Field and Stream, a magazine devoted to hunting and fishing, is offering, in conjunction with the outdoor equipment manufacturer Bushnell, $1million to anyone who can produce a verifiable photograph of Bigfoot.
"We're not saying we believe in Sasquatch, but if anyone's ever going to capture an image of one, we're guessing it'll be a hunter with a trail camera. That's why Bushnell is offering a chance at $… Read more
Wireless music sharing isn't a new concept--just take a look at the Microsoft Zune, which lets you beam songs to other Zune owners with the press of a button. The problem with the Zune is that everyone you want to share with must have that specific brand of MP3 player.
Aerielle is offering a different take on music sharing with the i2i Stream, a device that connects to any MP3 player and headphones. Each i2i Stream acts as a transmitter and receiver, allowing the user to either broadcast music or tune in to others' "stations"--and either … Read more
We've talked about Simplify Media here before as a great way to listen to music from your friends' iTunes music libraries (Windows and Mac). In fact, Simplify Media was one of our 10 best downloads of 2007. The minute you fire it up, you'll see why--as long as you and your friend both have a free account with Simplify Media, you can stream and listen to each others entire music collections on both Windows and Mac. But, the latest release of Simplify Media for iPhone and iPod Touch lets you take all of that music with you.

Last.fm's music-centered social network is one of our favorite ways to discover, share, and stream music online. Currently in version 1.01, the Last.fm application for the iPhone and iPod Touch allows many of the best features of Last.fm to break away from your computer and go on the road with you. The Last.fm app isn't perfect, however, and people looking for a straightforward Internet radio application would do better with offerings from Pandora and AOL.
When launching the Last.fm iPhone app for the first time, you'll be prompted to enter your … Read more
When we first got our hands on the Popcorn Hour A-100 we were salivating with excitement. The A-110 landed Tuesday, and once again our salivary glands started pumping so hard we had to be careful not to allow any seepage. Seriously, if they're going to send us stuff this good, the least they could do is provide complimentary bibs.
The A-110 media-streaming device isn't radically different from the A-100, but the changes that have been made to the hardware all appear to be seriously worthwhile. See our full photo gallery for more.
