Photos: LG Trax

The LG Trax is the latest HSDPA phone to cushion AT&T's lineup of high-speed devices. It supports AT&T's new video calling service, Video Share, as well as all the other AT&T broadband services like AT&T Music and AT&T's Cellular Video. The rest of its features are pretty decent as well, like a 1.3-megapixel camera, a music player, stereo Bluetooth, and quad-band support. The external screen has a mirrored surface when the phone is inactive, and there's a strange-looking touch-sensitive strip underneath it that acts as … Read more

Virgin Mobile says Aloha

Virgin Mobile is taking a break from its slew of Kyocera and UTStarcom cell phones by adding its first LG model. Like all handsets from the carrier, the Virgin Mobile Aloha sports a simple design and a feature set that shuns most expensive extras. Inside you'll find support for MP3 ringtones, a speakerphone, voice dialing, and some integrated games. We're never fans of flip phones without an external display but at this price we'll let it pass. The Aloha will be available in September for a very affordable $34.99.

What do you watch on a 24k TV?

Nearly a year after its first sightings, the $130,000 "Yalos Diamond" TV may finally have some competition--at least in the Department of Gaudy (otherwise known as DOG).

Speaking of abbreviations, we didn't know that LG stood for "Luxury Gold," as it does in the case of this 24-carat monstrosity. True to its moniker, the home theater system includes a 71-inch LCD in full 1080p high definition, as well as receivers, media players and a 500-watt sound all trimmed and plated in real gold, according to Aving. It's truly obscene.

Rumor: Verizon's 2007 road map?

Remember back when Verizon Wireless COO Jack Plating scoffed at the iPhone in a company memo, calling it the "iWhatever"?

Yeah, we all chuckled. Although he couldn't point to a single device that would command the attention of the Apple phone, he tried to rally his troops by saying that AT&T wouldn't be able to compete with Verizon's choice of phones.

Meanwhile, gadget blog Phone Arena says it's found Verizon's road map for which products are in store for what remains of 2007. Is this likely to erase the iPhone from … Read more

Plasma manufacturers can't keep up with LCD

Though revenue from plasma display panels (PDPs) shipments is on an upswing right now, that's not going to last, according to iSuppli.

It's been predicted for some time now that liquid crystal display (LCD) panels would eat away at the plasma industry, and now market research indicates that plasma panels--including the kind used in TVs--will reach their revenue-generating peak in the next two years. Plasma makers made $7.7 billion last year, and are on track to make $8.6 billion this year. In 2008, they'll top out at $10.2 billion, according to iSuppli.

Will LG's 'Opus' TVs live up to their name?

"Opus" is one of those brand names that oozes money, whether it be wine, cigars or any other top-of-the-line item. So why not cash in on that cachet, which other companies have spent millions to create?

That's precisely what LG hopes to do with its new high-end series of LCD TVs by that name, which is its answer to the likes of Sony's Bravia and Sharp's Aquos. LG launched the brand in appropriate style at Christie's in Manhattan, though the effect was somewhat diluted by the presence of other LG products such as a … Read more

LG: Big in Iran

You can't pick up a newspaper these days without reading about ominous signs of political turbulence in Iran. But there is a human side to the country, too.

And that human side wants to watch music videos and clean their floors. That pretty much explains why South Korean electronics giant LG is the primary advertiser on Iran Music, a music video channel out of the country. Three videos go by, and then there's an ad for LG vacuum cleaners, including the robotic vacuum that competes with the Roomba.

Sometimes ads come on for other LG products, but primarily … Read more

Photos: LG VX8550 Chocolate

The LG VX8500 Chocolate dominated the mobile scene for a long time with its sleek, slider design and unique touch-sensitive controls. However, a lot of people--us included--thought the touch pad was a little annoying and required too steep a learning curve. The new LG VX8550 Chocolate, however, is different. Instead of the touch pad navigation array, the LG VX8550 Chocolate has a mechanical scroll wheel. Though the rest of the navigation keys are touch-sensitive, they now have a vibrating setting so they provide a slight tactile feedback when touched. Also, the End/Power key is on the keypad instead of … Read more

LG finds more to life than black and silver

If it seems that most mobile phones are either silver or black, there's good reason: Most are silver or black. Then there's LG, which is trying to split the difference between the two with a new finish called "Titanium Black."

Perhaps the company thought its designers had taken the name of its "Shine" line too literally and wanted to tone it down a bit. LG says the metallic-gray casing is "edgier than black and more chic than silver," according to Luxurylaunches, so it will provide "the best of both looks and … Read more
