Could Yahoo's move away from media be AOL's big chance?

NEW YORK--Yahoo's new direction under CEO Marissa Mayer could be the big chance for AOL, a couple of former tech execs said today.

Ross Levinsohn, who served as interim Yahoo chief executive before Mayer's appointment, and Jon Miller, AOL's former CEO, said during a Business Insider conference in New York that Yahoo's shift away from becoming a media company in favor of focusing on its core tech offerings could be really lucky for AOL.

"It creates an opportunity for AOL I haven't seen for them in a number of years," said Miller, who … Read more

Yahoo's Mayer keeps focus on 'huge opportunity' in mobile

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer last night spoke before an invite-only crowd at Fortune's Most Powerful Women event. And although she offered up some details during her interview, she sidestepped any opportunity to fully outline her company's plans.

Not surprisingly, Mayer focused much of her discussion on mobile. The mobile market is growing rapidly, and shareholders are responding favorably to Mayer's claims that the space is integral to Yahoo's future growth. At a recent earnings call, Mayer spent a generous amount of time discussing mobile and why she believes Yahoo is well-positioned to capitalize. She did it … Read more

Yahoo Mail hijacking exploit selling for $700

An exploit selling for $700 may put millions of Yahoo Mail users at risk of having their e-mail account hijacked and their browsers redirected to malicious sites.

Marketed by an allegedly Egyptian hacker on a cybercrime forum, the exploit targets a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Yahoo.com that allows attackers to steal and replace tracking cookies, as well as read and send e-mail from a victim's account. Typically, an attacker will encode a malicious link in e-mails; the script is executed when the unsuspecting recipient clicks on the link, allowing access to the cookies and other sensitive information. … Read more

CNET's Tech Turkeys of 2012

It was a year of fakers: fake degrees, fake demonstrations, even fake interviews. It seems the tech industry this past year has been awash in people who couldn't tell the truth -- or maybe wished the truth were something different.

We had executives racing for the exits of what was a year ago one of the hottest companies on the Internet. We had a head scratcher of a mistake from Apple that even the company's CEO seemed to think was a conundrum. And we have a system that's supposed to protect entrepreneurs that -- and not to … Read more

Facebook denies report of search alliance with Yahoo

Facebook issued a statement Monday denying the report that its COO, Sheryl Sandberg, and Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer are in talks to partner on search solutions.

'Age of Marissa' to kick in with Yahoo Mail overhaul?

After months waiting for Yahoo's CEO Marissa Mayer to put her stamp on the company, we may be getting close. A report out late today from All Things D suggests that Yahoo is readying "a major overhaul" of Yahoo Mail for December that will sport "a cleaner, 'more Gmail-like' design."

Not much more is known. Even the original rumor was unclear what this might translate into when it came to the look of the redesign. Given all the attention Mayer devoted to mobile during the course of the company's recent quarterly earnings call, that … Read more
