Kaspersky update hoses Internet access for Windows XP users

Windows XP users who run certain Kaspersky antivirus software may find themselves offline after downloading a new update.

Released yesterday, the update causes Windows XP computers to lose their connection to the Internet.

IT administrators who use Kaspersky Endpoint Security at their organizations chimed into the Kaspersky forum yesterday and today complaining of connectivity problems. One person who manages around 12,000 computers with KES installed noted a slew of calls to the help desk from users knocked offline.

Oracle pushes out new Java update to patch security holes

Oracle has rushed out a new Java security patch designed to plug up a range of holes in the software.

The February Critical Patch Update for Java SE addresses 50 security vulnerabilities, 44 of which affect the use of Java as a plug-in for Web browers, according to an Oracle blog posted Friday. If not properly patched, the plug-in could open the door for attackers to remotely execute code on a PC or Mac by directing users to malicious Web sites.

Microsoft Office 2013 comes in several flavors, so today's show breaks down what you need to know about upgrading. A single copy of Office 2013 with the basic programs costs $140. But Microsoft is pushing a new yearly subscription version called Office 365. The $100 yearly fee brings regular updates, as well as bonus cloud storage space and free calling time on Skype. The fee also gives customers the option to download Office on five computers.

Apple TV software update adds Bluetooth keyboard support

Along with iOS 6.1 this morning, Apple also put out a minor update to its Apple TV system software that lets users control the device with a Bluetooth keyboard.

That feature -- which requires a second- or third-generation Apple TV -- was outed inside a beta developer last year, and came as part of today's update. It joins Apple's existing remote-control options, from the pack-in remote to its standalone iOS software application.

Apple releases iOS 6.1 with additional LTE support

After five beta test versions, Apple today released iOS 6.1, the first major update to iOS 6 since September.

The software, which went out this morning as an over-the-air update as well as a download through iTunes, brings a few new minor features, along with bug fixes.

Chief among the new features is 4G LTE support for more carriers, along with a feature that lets users purchase movie tickets from Fandango after finding showtimes using Siri.
