Trendnet demonstrates first 450Mbps dual-band wireless router

LAS VEGAS--During 2010, Trendnet introduced its (and also the world's) first 450Mbps Wireless-N router, the  TEW-691GR, and the TEW-690AP access point. Both of these products, however, support only a single wireless band, operating in the 2.4GHz frequency.

Now at CES 2011 today, the company continued the effort on the faster N speed by announcing and demonstrating the first 450Mbps true dual-band router, the TEW-692GR.

This is the first router for general consumers that offers the ceiling speed of 450Mbps in both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless bands. The true dual-band notion means that the router can … Read more

Trendnet debuts 450Mbps Wireless-N access point

As if offering what appears to be the first 450Mbps Wireless-N router on the market, the TEW-691GR, weren't enough, Trendnet today announced that it's shipping the first access point offering the same speed, the 450Mbps Wireless-N TEW-690AP.

An access point, which doesn't have routing functionality, is designed to add wireless capability to a nonwireless router or network. A wireless router has both routing functionality and a built-in access point. The new Trendnet access point, therefore, is a good solution for an existing network that doesn't have wireless capability or one that has legacy wireless, such as Wireless-G or Wireless-B. It's also good for those who want to replace their existing 300Mbps Wireless-N networks with a faster one.… Read more

Get an SMC Wireless-N router for $19.99 shipped

Before I get to today's deal, two quick housekeeping items.

First, subscribers to the Cheapskate newsletter are often frustrated because the deals are sold out or expired by the time they receive the e-mail (which tends to go out several hours after I've posted). I apologize for the hassle, but it's just the nature of my particular beast. Your best bet is to visit the Cheapskate page directly between 10 a.m. and noon ET; that's usually when I post the daily deal.

Second, I get scads of e-mail from our friends to the north, who … Read more

Low iPod Touch battery life may be in the router

When Apple released the iOS 4.0 update, a number of iPod Touch owners found their battery life was significantly shorter. When we originally covered this issue, the solutions at the time were to turn off the Wi-Fi features, or use Airplane mode (which also turns off Wi-Fi), along with other similar suggestions that prevent network use.

Overall the problem was definitely caused by the use of Wi-Fi, but many assumed the error was in the device itself. While Apple's software update in no doubt was what started the problem, the root of the issue appears it might be … Read more

Get a Pogoplug network storage adapter for $44

This is an update of a deal I posted a couple months back.

The CloudEngines Pogoplug is a nifty little gizmo that turns ordinary USB hard drives into network-attached storage. And not just network-attached, but also Web-accessible. And phone-accessible. The key word here is "accessible."

It originally sold for $129, but the second-generation Pogoplug is on sale at Buy.com for just $43.99 shipped. Thankfully, it's the gray model, not that eye-burning pink one I originally wrote about.

Here's how it works: you connect up to four USB hard drives to the Pogoplug, then plug … Read more

Belkin offers 'smart' router for smart meters

Belkin on Thursday introduced a router capable of offering real-time information and advice on home energy use via a Web interface.

The Conserve Gateway router connects with a home's existing smart meter, but is not just an overview of the energy usage for the home. It can be used to monitor and control specific devices and appliances hooked into the home network. It operates via Wi-Fi or Ethernet as a standalone router, or can tie into an existing broadband router, and also has an antenna for ZigBee communication.

The Belkin router software, which like many routers is Web accessible, … Read more

LaCie Wireless Space to rival Apple Time Capsule

Are you a PC user and still want something similar to Apple's Time Capsule? You have it now--and possibly more.

LaCie, the maker of stylish storage devices, announced Thursday what could be considered a rival for Time Capsule, the LaCie Wireless Space. Similar to the Time Capsule, the Wireless Space is a combined wireless router and NAS server.

However, while the Time Capsule's network storage function is not much more than a backup space for Time Machine, according to LaCie, the Wireless Space can do a lot more.

In a nutshell, it has the same feature set as … Read more
