iPhone 5 on shopping list of majority of iPhone 4 owners

The next iPhone device, which many are calling the iPhone 5, is being eyed by a hefty number of iPhone 4 owners.

A full 74 percent of iPhone 4 owners will upgrade to the next iPhone, according to survey results out today from deal site TechBargains.

The iPhone 5 is also on the shopping list of 71 percent of iPhone 3GS owners, 64 percent of iPhone 4S owners, 38 percent of Blackberry owners, and 22 percent of Android owners, all of whom plan to switch from their current handsets. The poll further discovered that 32 percent of people who don'… Read more

More iPhone 5 comparison pictures pop up

The iPhone 5 pictures just keep on leaking.

French blog Nowhereelse.fr has another round of pictures of the next iteration of the iPhone, generally dubbed the iPhone 5.

While yesterday's batch of pictures showed the front face of the next iPhone stacked up against an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S, today's set features a fully assembled iPhone 5 next to the existing versions.

The phone is placed next to what is labeled as iPhone 4, as well as an iPhone 3GS, which the site mistakenly refers to as an iPhone 3.

LG starts making 4-inch display maybe destined for iPhone 5

LG Display has begun to make a display that could be slated for the iPhone 5, according to a Reuters report.

"We just began mass production and we don't expect any disruption in supplies," Han Sang-beom, chief executive of LG Display, told reporters Wednesday, according to Reuters.

LGD, along with Samsung, are the two principal display suppliers for Apple's marquee products, such as the iPhone and iPad.

Other reports, however, have Sharp making the displays for the iPhone 5. And Toshiba has also been rumored as a display supplier for the iPhone 5.

Trading up to the next iPhone? Gazelle has a deal for you

For those planning on upgrading to the next iPhone model in September, Gazelle is taking the gamble out of early trade-ins with an extension of its price-lock guarantee.

Consumers who plan on selling a used iPhone to Gazelle can get a price quote locked-in now, but don't have to mail in their iPhone until October 1. It's widely rumored that the next iPhone model will go on sale September 21. If rumors are true, this would give sellers enough time to hold onto their current iPhone before replacing it with a newer model.

The extension only applies to … Read more

Your iPhone may be worth more than you think (podcast)

I was fascinated by Marguerite Reardon's recent Ask Maggie post about selling your old iPhone because -- like lots of people -- I bought an iPhone 4S last fall, which means that I'll still be under contract if and when the new iPhone comes out next month. I say "if," but Apple is widely expected to announce a new iPhone on Sept. 12, and if the past is any indication, I'm sure I'm going to want one. Maggie did a good job describing the issue in her post, but I had some more questions, … Read more

An industrial designer's take on the purported iPhone 5

We've been hearing about an upcoming "unibody" iPhone since before the 4S version of the gadget hit the streets. And lately, we've been seeing lots of images on various enthusiast sites of a purported unibody iPhone 5.

But so what, some might say. What's the big deal with this "unibody" anyway? Is it simply a way to remove unsightly seams?

Industrial designer Don Lehman has a nice post up on the Tech Block in which he discusses the ins and outs of the supposed iPhone 5 shown in a video and pictures posted … Read more

Why a longer iPhone 5 screen needs to happen

For months, we've heard talk of an iPhone 5 with a longer screen. The latest stories around the Internet suggest not only that this is a likely reality, but that iOS 6 supports this new resolution: 640x1,136 pixels, to be exact. That's an extra 176 pixels longer than the current iPhone's 640x960 display.

When I heard of the next iPhone's longer screen, I thought: I'd just prefer a slightly bigger screen, not necessarily a longer one. My current iPhone 4S feels like it has a perfect aspect ratio. Why change it?

Then I thought about it, and quickly changed my tune.… Read more

Apple's iPhone 4S drops to $149 with Sprint

Apple fans may be quick to read into this: over the weekend, Sprint dropped the price of its iPhone 4S from $199 to $149.

Could this be in anticipation of the iPhone 5?

Sprint's $50 price cut, first reported on by AllThingsD, comes before competing carriers have dropped their prices. AT&T's iPhone 4S is still $199, as is Verizon's.

According to AllThingsD, rumor has it that the price slash is a Sprint promotion but with Apple's approval. A spokesperson for the carrier told CNET that the price drop is simply a back-to-school promotion.

What will the next iPhone be called?

When Apple released the latest iPad earlier this year, Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said that naming the device iPad 3 would have been so predictable. "We've had many products where we've never used numbers," Schiller said. "Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't."

Some people don't care what the next iPhone will be called, but some people do. If you're in the latter camp, the big question is whether Apple will follow the more predictable route and go with iPhone 5, the name just about everybody has been calling the upcoming device, or once again throw us a curve.… Read more

Photo supposedly shows iPhone 5 assembled from leaked parts

Has someone assembled a more or less complete example of the next iPhone -- or at least the outside of it -- from leaked parts? Perhaps. Perhaps not. But that's the story accompanying a photo of the alleged build, which is making the rounds of the gadget and tech blogs today.

The shot apparently first appeared on the Asian site iLab Factory before being picked up by 9to5 Mac and finding its place in the Western blogosphere. iLab also posted photos of supposedly authentic individual components for the iPhone 5.

The iLab shot shown above includes what appears to … Read more
