Please stand by for a special announcement

The Macalope's antlers are all abuzz about the event Apple's hosting next Tuesday.

While rumors have been rolling about new iPods, it seems the smart money is on new Macs, probably of the iMac variety.

Whatever the case, clear your calendar, take the phone off the hook and stock up on popcorn!

Apple schedules Mac event for next Tuesday

Apple is going to hold a "product presentation" next Tuesday for members of the media that will focus on the Mac, according to an Apple representative.

The event will take place at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., at 10 a.m. PDT and "Apple executives" will be present, the representative said, declining to say whether CEO Steve Jobs will show up. Presumably, he'll be in the building.

The most recent Mac-related chatter has concerned a long-awaited redesign of the iMac, and other outlets, namely ThinkSecret, have already reported that Apple plans to introduce the … Read more

Apple to announce new products?

Well, duh.

But, for what it's worth, Forbes noticed the same bit about lower margin products the Macalope did on the conference call yesterday (tip o' the antlers to Daring Fireball).

Could that mean Apple is about to introduce some new products? If so, the possibilities include anything from a new version of the iPod music player to fresh versions of its hot-selling notebook computers. With Apple reporting surging sales of both its computers and music players, that would mean the company is about to go from one strength to another.

So what is it?! What is it?!

New iMac rumors growing, new iLife to come as well?

The back-to-school season is always one of Apple's most important quarters of the year. Buzz is building that the company won't let the season pass by without a new iMac.

The latest report, courtesy of Think Secret, claims that Apple has nailed down August 7 as the release date for new iMacs. It's probably about time; Apple hasn't released a new iMac in quite some time, and Intel released new chipsets in June.

AppleInsider has also pointed to late July/early August as the time frame for a new iMac launch, which would give Apple time … Read more

iLoad marks the height of gadget iNsanity

OK, so I get the iMac, the iBook, the iPod, iTunes, and even (grudgingly) the iPhone. Apple thought up the moniker, so we can't begrudge them for expanding on the very successful franchise. But the iTrip, the iRiver Clix and Cowon's range of iAudio products tested the limits of my patience. And I could have held my tongue if BMW's iDrive had been the end of iOpportunism.

But when I noticed the iLoad--a device for ripping CDs and DVDs to iPod without a computer--on Senior Editor Donald Bell's desk this morning, I felt the need … Read more

Next iMac to use new keyboard?

Now that the iPhone launch is out of the way, many Apple watchers expect the company to turn its attention to its stagnant iMac designs with newer models later this year.

AppleInsider is reporting that along with new redesigned iMacs, Apple will introduce a keyboard design already in place on its Macbooks to customers that prefer the all-in-one design. The site expects the new iMacs to arrive in a month or so in 20-inch and 24-inch models, which would allow Apple to have fresh systems amid the August back-to-school shopping season, one of the more important buying periods of the … Read more

Good things come to those who wait: How much will the iPhone cost next year?

Well, the iPhone's now out, and it's pretty darn popular. Unfortunately, it's also pretty darn expensive. At $500 for the 4GB version and $600 for the 8GB model, the iPhone's steep price is enough to keep many gadget hounds away from the Apple-y goodness. Waiting a year or two for the iPhone's second or third iterations might be the best course of action. While purely speculation, it's a fairly safe bet that future versions of the iPhone will cost less and offer more features than the first iPhone.

Last year, Apple Matters published an article detailing the historical prices of the iPod, … Read more

Brain-eating zombies invade SF Apple store

A horde of decaying zombies invaded San Francisco's downtown Apple store on Friday evening, hunting for brains, terrifying the customers, and gnawing on iMacs.

I've placed some photos here. I'm pleased to report that the zombies ultimately decided human brains were tastier than plastic iMacs, although it wasn't for lack of effort in trying to vary what must be a monotonous diet.

It was difficult to judge the exact number of zombies that shuffled through the city's shopping district, losing limbs, blood, and unmentionable body parts along the way, but probably at least 150 converged … Read more

Is that Apple ripe for the plucking?

Did you know it's been 204 days since the last iMac update? That number might mean more to you and your tech purchasing patterns if we also told you that, according to MacRumors.com's calculations, the average span between iMac updates is 168 days. Thus, the MacRumors Buyer's Guide concludes that you should hold off buying an iMac until Apple makes good on the overdue refresh. Similar guidance is provided for all Mac desktops and laptops along with iPods, Cinema Displays, and Xserve servers. The snapshots of where Apple's various products are in their refresh cycle … Read more
