Sony Reader apps for iPhone/Android drop in December

When it released its latest batch of touch-screen e-readers, Sony said it was prepping e-reader apps for iPhone and Android. Well, though we don't have an exact launch date yet, we do have an exact month: December.

Those apps should go live soon, which is good news for Sony Reader fans. Of course, Amazon and Barnes & Noble have had apps out for a while, and even upstart Kobo has been in the e-reader app game for several months. No word on a Sony iPad app, but first things first. More info here.

Sketch-A-Search with Yahoo to find good eats

Back in April, Yahoo Mobile announced a unique approach to searching for nearby restaurants with the Sketch-A-Search app for iOS. The concept of the app couldn't be more simple: pull up a map of the area that you're currently in, and then sketch a circle (or any approximation of a shape) around the neighborhoods or blocks of streets where you'd like to eat. Sketch-A-Search then drops in pins to indicate the restaurants that fall within the designated space. Clicking the pins pulls up information on each establishment, including the phone number, operation hours, and Yahoo user reviews.… Read more

iPhone app reveals that sex makes us happiest

Of the 2,200 people who filed 250,000 mood status updates through the iPhone app called Track Your Happiness, those who were at their happiest were two things: highly focused and having sex. In fact, they rated their emotion level an average score of 90 on a scale of 1 to 100.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, sex turned out to produce the highest rating of any activity recorded, according to research published in Science by Harvard psychologists.

Whether they actually rated their mood mid-coitus or waited until after remains unknown, which is a shame, because it would be interesting to know … Read more

Google Voice finally in Apple's App Store

There haven't been too many iPhone applications that prompted a federal investigation, but one that did--Google Voice--is now finally available in the App Store.

Google announced the availability of the official app today, nearly a year and a half after it first submitted Google Voice to Apple. Apple's reluctance to approve Google Voice--Google claimed that Apple actually rejected the app while Apple said it was evaluating it--led to an investigation by the Federal Communications Commission into Apple's App Store approval policies, and a deepening of the rift between the two formerly close partners.

Search RSS feeds and more

Taptu started off as a mobile search application aimed at helping users locate appropriate content for small-screened devices, with a particular focus on creating a user-friendly interface for touch screens. eBay Motors previews mobile app for iPhone

eBay Motors gave us a sneak peek at its upcoming app for iPhone at the 2010 SEMA Show. While we expected the app to be capable of searching eBay auctions for parts and vehicles, the developers managed to think up a few features--such as VIN scanning and a virtual garage--that truly piqued our interest.

The app allows you to set up a custom home-screen search, which displays a sort of slideshow of the top results when the app opens. You can also simply perform individual searches for vehicles by make, model, year, etc. Once a vehicle is selected, the app … Read more
