Lightsaber relay to kick off Comic-Con 2012

Calling all Jedis! Grab your lightsabers, lace up your running shoes, and come embark on what's sure to be an epic journey to Comic-Con 2012. Even better, you'll get to use the Force to help some young Padawans in need.

Lucasfilm, Nerdist Industries, Octagon, and Machinima have teamed up to put on an Olympic torch-style relay race called Course of the Force that will help kick off this year's Comic-Con in San Diego and benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

The 136-mile run/walk will begin in Santa Monica, Calif., on July 7. At every quarter-mile marker, participants will hand off the official Course of the Force lightsaber to the next runner until they reach San Diego on July 11, which just happens to be preview night for Comic-Con (the show officially kicks off on July 12). … Read more

Peek at these pixelicious superheroes

It's a bird, it's a plane...it's a bunch of pixels?

Superheroes and villains from some of the most beloved comic and sci-fi franchises are the focus of "Pixel Heroes" by artist Pahito.

This elaborate piece features 78 legendary characters immortalized in stylish low-resolution pixel form, arranged in no specific order. It is amusing to see some of my favorite friends and foes from X-Men, Batman, and "Star Wars" in glorious low resolution.

Pixel Heroes is available in various print sizes, ranging from a miniature 8x10-inch portrait, at $22, up to a large 21x28-inch masterpiece, conservatively priced at $45. The collection of caped crusaders and masked marauders is available on hoodies, T-shirts, framed art, stretched canvas, iPhone and iPad cases, and laptop skins (Mac and PC).… Read more

Low Latency No. 8: My precious privacy

Privacy has without a doubt become one of the most controversial topics the Internet has ever seen. At the forefront of this never-ending discussion are Google and Facebook, two corporations that arguably know more about us than we know about ourselves.

Today's comic was born after The 404 podcast covered Google's ad preference settings page--a section of your user account where Google will transparently disclose what kind of Internet user it thinks you are. The all-seeing eye of Sauron might be a bit harsh, but it represents the "think twice" mentality one might consider before doing a Google search.… Read more

Low Latency No. 7: Mega-pileup

Agree or disagree with the shutdown of MegaUpload, it certainly sends an intimidating message about just how dangerous Internet censorship can be. While we are in no way condoning piracy, we also feel bad for the MegaUpload users who were using the service for legitimate purposes. … Read more

Comic book superheroes take on world hunger

Vanquishing a single supervillain suffering from severe chemical burns (the Joker, just to name one) and suffering from clear inadequacy issues is nothing for the superheroes of DC Comics when compared with real threats like drought, famine, and widespread hunger.

For the far less sexy but far more real battle with hunger in the Horn of Africa, DC's Justice League is doing a bit of crowdsourcing. DC Entertainment, home to Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and a few other big brand name badasses, is matching donations to Mercy Corps, Save the Children, and the International Relief Project for their efforts providing relief on the ground in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya.

The worst drought in the area in the past 60 years is affecting 13 million people, with 250,000 threatened by possible starvation. As the Justice League points out in its appeal, the situation is so critical that the United Nations officially declared famine for the first time in 21 years. Makes a speeding, out-of-control train seem like a moderately difficult round of Sudoku.… Read more

Low Latency No. 6: It's not a hard concept

Jeff: First, a disclaimer. I happen to think Razer makes great products. I've personally reviewed a handful of its gaming accessories and have, on average, been impressed each and every time.

For the second time in a row now, though, Razer has nabbed the People's Voice Award at CES, this time with the impressive yet borderline science fiction Project Fiona portable gaming tablet.

While it's certainly an impressive concept design, one has to wonder where "concept" ends and where practicality begins. We finally got some hands-on time with last year's winner, the Razer Blade gaming laptop, but even its design has seen significant changes compared with just 12 months ago. Will Project Fiona suffer the same fate?… Read more

A new DRM-free experiment: 'Diesel Sweeties'

Rock band Nine Inch Nails tried it. Comedian Louis C.K. tried it. Now Web comic "Diesel Sweeties" is trying it: DRM-free content.

Starting last week, cartoonist Richard Stevens III released a free PDF of "Pocket Sweeties," his first book from the comic, on the occasion of his 35th birthday. The result is a PDF that's not locked within the digital rights management wrapper that constrains the typical e-book.

The 2003 book features some of the comic strips' earliest episodes, mixing up the themes of robots and romance and rendered with Stevens' carefully constructed coarsely … Read more

Low Latency No. 5: It's like 3D-printing 'Inception!'

LAS VEGAS--We've seen some pretty wacky and innovative technology here at CES, but 3D printers have really caught our attention.

These plastic weaving machines are finally coming down in price and flirting with affordability, but we thought it'd be fun to propose a 3D printer which, well, can print another 3D printer. … Read more
