Review: Mappr for Instagram Photo Map tags locations

Mappr provides a useful, but at times redundant service to tag your photos with location markers before they are uploaded to Instagram. While the core OS on any iPad or iPhone will do the same, the location settings on Instagram are not integrated with a map, so Mappr allows you to see where all of your photos were taken in real-time visualization. It's effective, but ultimately limited in features.

When you open the app, you can choose to take a new photo or add one from your photo library. It is then automatically posted on the map if location … Read more

Review: Win them over with Presentation Pointer's competence

Presenters owe it to themselves to check out Presentation Pointer since it's one of the most flexible and easy-to-use presentation tools we've seen. With a few easy, closely-matched keystrokes, you can toggle your cursor into an enlarged pointer, highlight, or spotlight effect; draw on the screen; zoom in and out; and perform other effective, easy-to-remember enhancements. That's key, as anyone who has stood in front of an audience can attest: It's a bad time to get muddled. Presentation Pointer takes that into consideration with several easy-to-find access points, but even more so by grouping commands. For … Read more

Review: Tune out mRadio Player since that's about all you can do with it

We're all for Internet radio apps that make it easy to expose yourself to a world of music, but mRadio Player takes the "basic is better" concept too far in the wrong direction. This freeware radio player offers no controls beyond Play and Pause buttons, and you're limited to a preloaded list of stations: a whopping 18 in all and mostly European commercial jazz and classical stations. The free mRadio Player is suitable for Windows versions from XP to 8.

It was not without trepidation that we viewed mRadio Player's user interface, which takes rudimentary … Read more

Review: Create and share memes with Junaroo

Junaroo attempts to capitalize on the unstoppable momentum of social media-based memes; and while it works, the numerous barriers to getting it set up and running can be frustrating. Loaded with dozens of free images, some new and some very familiar, Junaroo manages to make the meme creation part easy enough, but sharing with friends or posting to social networks is less so, which immediately limits the usefulness of the app.

When you first open Junaroo, you'll need to create an account, a process that is unnecessarily hard. Requiring a phone number or access to your Facebook information (an … Read more

Review: Instashare streamlines moving files between iOS devices and your Mac

Instashare manages to stand out among the increasingly crowded number of file transfer and backup apps on the App Store. That alone makes it worth downloading for anyone with multiple iOS devices and desktop computers, but it also works seamlessly when sharing files with other users. While there are some hiccups in execution and we noticed some small performance issues, this is one of the better options currently available for what it does.

Instashare requires you to have the client installed on any device with which you want to share. However, unlike other clients, Instashare is designed to be integrated … Read more

Review: iFileExpress provides a desktop-to-iOS device file transfer tool

The purpose of iFileExpress is to make transferring files between your iOS devices and Mac or PC easier. However, by requiring tethered file transfers through iTunes or the iFileExpress desktop client, the service lags behind some other wireless options. It is more secure, but the setup and execution of the software will make it a second or even third choice for many iOS users.

The app opens with a full tutorial for how to use it. For the most part, you will need to have already installed iFileExpress on your PC or Mac, or you can set it up in … Read more

Review: Edit video with ease, with free, open-source Shotcut

Shotcut is a free, open-source video editor and encoder that can handle a wide range of media formats. It has many user-friendly features; for example, it doesn't notify you of its frequent (almost daily) updates: You simply download an updated version of the program when you want to. It's compatible with JACK Audio and Melted Server technology, and it even offers an experimental GPU Processing feature. Shotcut can test MLT XML files, too. Several language options are available, and users can create and share new translations. The project's Web site also offers a forum, FAQs, and other … Read more

Review: Create quick storyboards with timed audio with Moonbot's StoryTime

Moonbot's StoryTime audio storyboard app is just like everything emanating from the Moonbase: Cool, quirky, and outside the box. Like the traditional storyboard, StoryTime is designed to help you get your ideas down quickly, try out a lot of different concepts, and rough out scenes and sequences. It's not intended for creating polished final products but rather to give interactive story builders, animators, movie designers, and others a quick-and-easy tool for assembling storyboards, timing scenes and audio, and saving the results as a video or as an XML file that can be used with pro editing tools. StoryTime … Read more
