Lawsuit stokes Apple, HTC fans' passion

As Apple and HTC prepare to duke it out inside a courtroom, fans of both companies' smartphones are taking sides on the Web.

The news of Apple's suing over 20 patents the iPhone maker claims are being infringed on by HTC was a trending topic on Twitter early Tuesday, as thousands of new tweets every minute came in. But fan forums were abuzz over the lawsuit as well.

Apple sues HTC--court filings

Earlier this morning, Apple revealed that it had filed suit against smartphone manufacturer HTC, accusing it of infringing on 20 Apple patents tied to the iPhone.

Named as exhibits in the litigation, a handful of Android and Windows Mobile devices including Google's Nexus One, the T-Mobile G1, the Droid Eris, the Touch Diamond, the Touch Pro2, and the Imagio.

Apple sues HTC over iPhone patents

Apple is suing phone maker HTC and has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission, alleging that the Taiwanese company is infringing 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone.

"We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We've decided to do something about it," Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, said in a statement Tuesday. "We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours."

HTC Sense UI installed on Motorola Droid

Looks like those who love messing around with HTC software can't get enough of the Desire's Sense UI. After its first appearance on the Nexus One, someone has now installed it on a Motorola Droid (Milestone for us GSM folks). From the discussion thread on AllDroid, capabilities such as pinch to zoom and Flash on the browser are demonstrated in images and videos.

In the video embedded above, certain aspects of the implementation still appear a little unresponsive, but that's to be expected since the software wasn't designed for the Motorola hardware.

HTC Incredible inching toward Verizon

One handset we've yet to really tackle on Android Atlas is the forthcoming HTC Incredible. Designed like the Nexus One, the Incredible boasts a 3.7-inch display, 256MB RAM, an optical trackpad, and Android 2.1 with HTC's Sense UI. The screen is said to be "very vibrant" and may be AMOLED, like the recently announced Desire and Legend.

HTC: Hero, Droid Eris getting Android 2.1 update

BARCELONA, Spain--In addition to introducing two new Android phones, HTC revealed on Tuesday that it will release an Android 2.1 update for the HTC Droid Eris as well as the Sprint and GSM versions of the HTC Hero.
