Buzz Out Loud 1216: Geek soap operas (podcast)

Between the legal drama playing out in the South Bay (Gizmodo raid! Dubious warrants! Potential counter-suits!) and the latest developments in the Infinity Ward/Activision internal drama (Involuntary labor! Withholding royalties and bonuses!), it's pretty much the Days of our Lives around here. Also, no Hulu in the UK, and Comcast gets a big, steaming pile of poo from its users. But at least it's Golden Poo.

Sprint hosting EVO 4G-related event next month

Sprint has been busy sending out invitations to an exclusive event next month in New York, which will put its new HTC EVO 4G front and center and will feature remarks from Sprint CEO, Dan Hesse.

It's hard for me to imagine the carrier sending out invitations specifically referencing the phone if it didn't plan to advance the conversation, especially as we get closer to the "summer" release time frame mentioned by Sprint as this year's CTIA unveiling.

As I've mentioned here before, the rumored release dates for the Evo 4G are June 6 … Read more

Microsoft claims Android steps on its patents

The mobile phone wars got more interesting late on Tuesday as Microsoft publicly asserted for the first time that Google's Android operating system infringes on its intellectual property.

Microsoft has taken the position, according to those close to the company, that Android infringes on the company's patented technology and that the infringement applies broadly in areas ranging from the user interface to the underlying operating system.

In a statement to CNET, Microsoft deputy general counsel Horacio Gutierrez said that, although Microsoft prefers to resolve intellectual property licensing issues without resorting to lawsuits, it has a responsibility to make … Read more

Buzz Out Loud 1213: No iPad for you! (podcast)

Is this the ultimate early adopter penalty? If you buy more than two iPads to send to your friends overseas or give to your family, you risk a lifetime ban on future purchases? That just can't be right. Also not right: the sweet little child who calls tell us how to get porn on the iPhone. Just upsetting. Plus: Palm deathwatch and Facebook's privacy untangled (er, sort of).

Pick the next Prizefight: HTC Droid Incredible vs. ?

When the news first hit that Verizon Wireless would offer the HTC Droid Incredible, the reaction was fast and furious and I received an inordinate amount of e-mails about the smartphone. Clearly, the Android device struck a chord with many of you.

Since then, we've had a chance to review the Droid Incredible and it truly is incredible, but, if we're being completely honest, we definitely underestimated the smartphone at first. Sure it had a better camera and more internal memory than some of its competitors, but it's not like the Incredible was offering any new, groundbreaking … Read more

Don't bet on Lenovo saving Palm

Lenovo has reportedly emerged as the leading candidate to buy Palm after HTC bowed out, but would the Chinese PC maker really pull the trigger? Logic dictates that Lenovo is an unlikely savior.

Reuters is reporting that Lenovo is in the running for Palm, which is up for sale as it tries to avoid a death spiral. Lenovo emerged as a likely buyer after HTC bowed out of the running. Reuters cites investment bankers who say Lenovo "is looking into" buying Palm. Lenovo would allegedly pay $1.3 billion or so for it.

But here's the problem: … Read more

Droid Incredible arrives early for few, impresses many

Thanks to a computer glitch, a handful of lucky Verizon Wireless customers found themselves getting the HTC Droid Incredible more than a week before its official launch date.

According to a few users in AndroidForums, their new Verizon handset arrived on Tuesday and Wednesday, days ahead of the scheduled April 29 date. After a little nay-saying and provocation, a user by the name of SoSmarmy decided to film himself powering up the phone. As I gather it, the number of users who have received their Droid Incredible was minimal and the glitch has since been fixed.

While many of us … Read more

HTC Desire coming to U.S. Cellular

We missed this little nugget earlier in the week, but we still think U.S. Cellular customers will find it of interest.

Using its Facebook page to announce the news, the carrier revealed that it will offer the HTC Desire this summer after the device has gone through testing. The Desire, which was introduced at Mobile World Congress 2010, is an Android 2.1 smartphone similar to the Nexus One but with HTC Sense.

In addition to the Desire, U.S. Cellular also teased that it would offer another yet-to-be-named Android device in the future. What could it be?
