Tesla versus the BBC

Feeling that electric cars were getting a bad rap due to a BBC correspondent's four-day journey from London to Edinburgh in a Mini E, a Tesla driver took to the road and made the over 400-mile trip in a day, ultimately getting to Scotland before the BBC.

BBC correspondent Brian Milligan set out to drive the electric-powered Mini E from London to Edinburgh, with stops at public charging stations whenever necessary. It took him four days to complete the trip on his 484-mile route, and he reported an average speed--taking charging time into account--of 6 mph. Toward the end of the journey Milligan was shivering from the cold, as using the heater would have lessened the car's range. … Read more

BMW adopts Nvidia GPU for in-car displays

LAS VEGAS--After dominating PC graphics, Nvidia set its sights on other industries, most recently getting into the automotive sector, powering navigation system graphics in Audi cars. Now Nvidia announces a partnership with BMW to power the graphics in all of its infotainment systems.

In Audi navigation systems, the Nvidia GPU allows rich 3D building and landscape rendering. BMW's current high-end navigation systems also employ rich 3D maps, but the Nvidia GPU should improve rendering speed. Nvidia says its GPU will enable 1280x600 resolution graphics in BMW's next generation infotainment system.

A prototype of the new infotainment system will … Read more

One-of-a-kind Tesla Roadster art car on display

Adding another project to his "auto" biography, artist Laurence Gartel has designed a one-of-a-kind Tesla Roadster art car.

Gartel, who is known for his pioneering work in digital media, has shown in New York's Museum of Modern Art and other renowned museums and galleries and has work included in the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of American History. Gartel has also published several books, including "Auto Motion," which coincided with a fully digital 3D fine-art sculpture exhibition of the same name.

Northern California electric automaker Tesla collaborated with Gartel on the unique design. BMW has been collaborating with famous artists for years on numerous art cars.

The Roadster will be featured tonight at Gartel's Art Basel festival in Miami Beach. The car is for sale for $109,000, but because it features a wrap, the buyer will have to negotiate the price of the wrap with the artist, Tesla said. The car will be in and around Miami Beach all week.

Tesla takes electric cars closer to pro racing

During practice sessions for the Race of Champions last week, two Tesla Roadsters got a real workout in the hands of such professional racing drivers as Michael Schumacher, Sebastien Loeb, and Alain Prost.

Video of one of the races shows Schumacher and Loeb battling it out on the parallel track, the cars taking the many curves in eerie silence. With the heavily designed indoor course and the brightly colored cars, they almost look like toys.

As they were run as an exhibition, no winners were declared for the races in the Tesla Roadsters.

The Race of Champions is a yearly … Read more

Toyota and Tesla's RAV4 EV is only the first step

Tesla got a great deal on the NUMMI plant in its deal with Toyota this year, but what does Toyota get out of it? At the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, Toyota let us know, pulling the wraps off of its RAV4 EV Concept powered by Tesla. However, the EV wasn't the production-bound model that many were expecting. Rather, what we were shown was more of a stepping stone to a more complete vehicle that may come later.

To call the RAV4 EV a glorified test mule would be understating things a bit. Then again, the concept is built … Read more

Panasonic invests $30 million in Tesla

Japanese electronics giant and battery manufacturer Panasonic has invested $30 million in Tesla Motors, the U.S. automaker best-known for its all-electric luxury sports car, both companies announced Thursday.

Per the terms of the deal, Panasonic, which already has a working relationship with Tesla through their battery pack collaboration, purchased Tesla common stock at $21.15 per share, acquiring approximately a 2 percent stake in the company.

Tesla, which also builds power trains for use in electric vehicles in addition to manufacturing cars, has previously used battery components from a variety of companies. But the company announced Thursday that it &… Read more

Tesla opens its Model S electric car factory

On Wednesday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and California Senator Diane Feinstein stood before the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI) plant, shuttered since April, and announced its new beginning as the base for Tesla Model S production. The press conference was capped by the unveiling of a large Tesla sign over the plant.

Tesla Vice President for Manufacturing Gilbert Passin conducted a tour through the parts of the factory that will host production lines for the Model S. Passin boasted that acquiring NUMMI was a huge cost savings for Tesla, as building a new plant would cost hundreds of millions … Read more

Nvidia helps China to supercomputer crown

Nvidia chips are powering a Chinese supercomputer that the graphics chip supplier claims has achieved the fastest speeds to date. The "Tianhe-1A" has hit 2.507 petaflops, beating a system at Tennessee-based Oak Ridge National Laboratories.

The new system would top another Chinese supercomputer also using Nvidia chips called Nebulae, rated at 1.271 petaflops (one petaflop is one thousand trillion operations per second). Both the Nebulae and Tianhe-1A performance ratings are based on the Linpack benchmark, the most widely used performance yardstick for supercomputers. Nebulae is currently rated No. 2 in the world based on the Top500 June list. The Oak Ridge system is rated the fastest at 1.75 petaflops, according to the Top500 June list. Tianhe-1A will top the supercomputer list at a Chinese conference that starts tomorrow.

Tianhe-1A combines 7,168 Nvidia Tesla M2050 graphics processing units (GPUs) with 14,336 Intel Xeon central processing units (CPUs). Nvidia is not only claiming the performance crown but a greener supercomputer, as well. The machine consumes only 4.04 megawatts, making it three times more power efficient than a CPU-only system, Nvidia said in a statement.

High-end GPUs typically contain hundreds of processing cores, allowing them to accelerate certain types of computational tasks more efficiently and thereby much faster than CPUs.

The machine, which is already fully operational, was designed by the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) and is housed at the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin… Read more

Tesla opens doors to Model S factory

Tesla Motors will officially open the doors today on what may be the only automotive factory left in California.

The Fremont, Calif., plant was formerly a New United Motor Manufacturing (NUMMI) facility that had been opened in 1984, but closed in 2010. Tesla bought the plant and has plans to renovate it to accommodate assembling its Model S electric cars.

The Model S is the Tesla Roadster luxury sports car's practical sibling. The all-electric sedan will have a range of 160, 230, or 300 miles on a single charge depending on which Model S Tesla battery pack option is … Read more
