Hungry for more

An effective reservation system can be the difference between happy, pampered diners and grouchy, hungry ones. Cozy Restaurant Reservation is a basic program that allows users to take dining reservations. Although the program functions as designed, its lack of restaurant-specific features makes it hard to recommend.

The program's interface is attractive, reminding us of more recent versions of Microsoft Office applications. We got the sense that the program was originally meant for another purpose--just a generic scheduler, perhaps--and that it was tweaked slightly so that it could be passed off as a reservation system. Tables--which are referred to as &… Read more

iCal displaying 'Access not permitted' error

One problem you may run into when using iCal is the program constantly popping up with an error stating "Access to account 'account name' is not permitted." This may happen after syncing from another system, or after migrating to a new account or computer, but upon dismissing the error it may pop up again immediately or whenever the calendars are refreshed.

This happens because iCal has become set up with extra CalDAV accounts, either for another calendar server or for one that is already existing. This may have happened because of a problem with the migration from another … Read more

Tempting templates

In recent years it's become very easy to create custom greeting cards, calendars, brochures, photo books, and more all from the comfort of home. Numerous applications exist to help users create professional-looking projects with very little know-how. ArcSoft Print Creations is one of these, combining multiple design tools into one application. Unfortunately, although the program itself is free, most of the templates it offers must be paid for if users want to print them without a watermark.

The program's interface is attractive and intuitive. The home screen allows users to select whether they want to create a new … Read more

Start your streak and swing to win: iPhone apps of the week

Probably like many people reading this blog post, I experienced firsthand the trouble Apple and AT&T had with the overwhelming number of preorders for the iPhone 4 on Tuesday. I thought I was being smart by deciding to skip the long lines and get the iPhone 4 delivered to my house, but I ended up getting nothing but errors after only the first few steps into the process.

After several attempts, I decided to wait a couple of days before trying again and ended up buying the black 32GB model through Apple on Thursday. Unfortunately, with the enormous … Read more
