One of the most affordable ways to add a bit of brainpower to your lights and appliances is to smarten up the sockets you're plugging them into. We've already seen products like the Belkin WeMo Switch do exactly this, providing you with remote control over device power, along with a few other functions. I suppose it was only a matter of time before we saw this approach applied to the common household power strip.
Self-destruction is the core value of our current times.
Just as we seek to destroy ourselves with our self-indulgence and our joie de vivre, we seek our private messages to be destroyed before the world's security services read them.
And so along comes a company called PowerInbox to assist us on our path to righteousness.
Seeing, perhaps, that Snapchat, the send-it-and-forget-it messaging app, was rather popular, PowerInbox is offering SecretInk. This delightful concoction claims to have all the properties of Snapchat, but for e-mail (and even SMS).… Read more
Microsoft has caught up to a key collaboration feature of Google Docs with its rival Office 365 service: the ability for multiple people to simultaneously edit the same document.
The feature now is available for the Web versions of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document.
"New real-time presence helps you see where your co-authors are working in the document so that you don't create conflicts as you edit," said Microsoft's Amanda Lefebvre in a blog post Wednesday. "Additionally, the new ability to see changes to text and formatting as they happen will help you and your … Read more
While efficient hardware and software can help preserve energy, the greatest drain on your laptop's battery will largely be the programs that you use. For instance, if you decide to encode a lengthy high-quality movie file, then you will ramp up all cores of your processor to their maximum, and even on a full charge, you will be left with a short amount of battery life available.
To help preserve battery life, in OS X Mavericks Apple has implemented features like App Nap to pause unused programs, and CPU timer coalescing to allow processors to maintain a lower average … Read more
Did J.D. Power overreach in giving its top customer satisfaction nod to Samsung instead of Apple?
The company on Thursday announced that Apple had come in second behind Samsung overall in its consumer study on tablet satisfaction. Apple's iPad scored 833 points out of 1,000 in tablet satisfaction, while Samsung topped that by a small margin at 835.
Not surprisingly, much has been made about Samsung's getting one up on Apple. But as Fortune pointed out Friday, Samsung's win doesn't necessarily add up.
A table that J.D. Power didn't provide with its … Read more
Apple is looking at eliminating the middleman in solar power charging by outfitting devices with their own converters.
Published Thursday by the US Patent and Trademark Office, a patent application dubbed "Power management systems for accepting adapter and solar power in electronic devices," envisions a power management system that can direct solar power to a laptop or other device without the need for an external converter.
Using solar power to charge your portable devices is hardly a new concept. But Apple's invention would remove some of the hassle involving in current methods. Instead of relying on bulky … Read more
It wasn't that long ago that desktop "computer" audio was synonymous with awful-sounding, cheap 'n' cheerful plastic speakers, but over the last few years Audioengine, Emotiva, Adam Audio, and many others started making seriously good high-quality monitors, with prices starting around $200 a pair.
I mostly focus on desktop speakers a la carte, but this time out I'm checking out PSB Speakers' ultracompact Alpha PS1 monitors paired with the almost-as-small SubSeries 100 sub. This three-piece system reaches lower into the bass than any of the aforementioned monitors without breaking the bank. Alpha PS1s run $299 per … Read more
Blenders are fun, but buying the wrong one is anything but. With countless models available at a wide range of price points, it can be hard to tell the upgrades from the downgrades. Are more watts always better? How much does the shape of the jar matter? Could a top-of-the-line blender be the smartest upgrade you'll ever make? The dumbest?
If your head spins just thinking about it, don't worry -- our handy blender roundup will help you find the perfect machine for your needs, whether you're looking to spend $50 or $500.Blendtec Designer Series WildSide Blender … Read more
There's a large middle ground between cheaply made budget blenders and all-powerful, all-expensive, heavy-duty ones, and this is where you'll find the Cuisinart PowerEdge 1000 Watt Blender. Priced at $199, it aims for the sweet spot: its high wattage and sturdy, die-cast construction qualify it as a worthy upgrade from basic countertop models, but its price leaves it affordable enough to make sense for the frugal shopper.
I didn't know the price of the M-Audio M3-8 when I first started listening, I just assumed it was $900 to $1,000 for the pair of speakers. No, the street price is closer to $600 for a pair, around the same price as for one of the reigning wireless champions, such as the Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air or Bose SoundDock 10. And the M3-8s deliver so much more of the sound of your music than those two wireless models, it's not even close. For one thing a pair of M3-8s produce stereo, and the sort of … Read more
