Brain scan may spot disease in athletes while they're still alive

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease thought to play a role in the deaths (which are sometimes suicides) of athletes, soldiers, and others who have suffered concussions and repeated hits to the head, is currently only able to be diagnosed postmortem.

"After a while it gets old and not so fulfilling to take the brain out when [an athlete] is dead," Julian Bailes, a neurosurgeon and director of the Brain Injury Research Institute, told CNN. "At that point there is no solution, no answer."

So a study co-authored by Bailes suggesting that PET scans … Read more

Online services for Madden NFL 11, others get sacked

Electronic Arts has once again announced that a wide array of its games will soon no longer be playable online.

The company has updated its Online Service Updates page to announce that Madden NFL 11 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii will lose its online playability on January 11. FIFA Soccer 11, NBA Live 10, and NHL 11 are among the other titles that will no longer be playable.

EA has several times in the past removed online services for older titles. In a statement posted to its Web site, the game publisher said that the decision to … Read more

NFL players tweet prayers, perspective after murder-suicide

NFL players and teams have turned to Twitter to express their sorrow after learning that Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher shot his girlfriend to death before turning the gun on himself.

The 25-year-old linebacker shot Kasandra Perkins, 22, with whom he had an infant daughter, this morning before driving to Arrowhead Stadium, where he shot himself to death in front of Chiefs staff, the Kansas City Police Department said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Chiefs and the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this terrible tragedy," the NFL said in a … Read more

How to watch an NFL game in 59 minutes

The official length of last week's thrilling Giants-Cowboys game was 3 hours and 25 minutes, although by my calculations there was only an hour of football worth watching.

That's not commentary on the quality of the game, but rather the endless stream of commercials, "analysis," and challenges that end up taking twice as long the actual football action. For DVR users accustomed to zipping past every commercial, watching a live NFL game can be an unbearable slog, even if the game itself is great. That's why I gave up watching NFL in real time years … Read more

MLB, NFL and a debate all at once? There's an app for that

Ever since I heard the third debate between President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney was going to be on a Monday night, I've been complaining about the overlap to anyone who'd listen.

Why would you go head-to-head with "Monday Night Football," the sports juggernaut on ESPN? Why remove 10-14 million potential viewers (that's been the range of MNF viewers this season) from the equation?

At least there wasn't going to be a baseball playoff game at the same time, I thought. Well, I was wrong. And so tonight, you have the perfect TV … Read more

Record-breaking NFL tweeter celebrates end of ref lockout

Green Bay Packers guard T.J. Lang celebrated the end of the NFL referee lockout today, a day after his candid tweet broke a retweet record.

Lang tweeted one last jab today to mark the return of the officials to the field:

"Good to see the regular refs coming back! I'm sure the scabs are disappointed they have to return to their jobs at footlocker," he tweeted today.

Lang's original tweet, which read "F--k it NFL. Fine me and use the money to pay the regular refs," stirred up plenty of commentary yesterday. It … Read more

Twitter founder says influence is in retweets. NFL player shows why

When Green Bay Packers guard TJ Lang let loose a couple of F-bomb-laden tweets last night in the wake of the Monday Night Football refereeing disaster that cost his team a victory, his posts were quickly seen by far more people than followed him on Twitter.

Lang's two tweets, one which read "Got f---ed by the refs.. Embarrassing. Thanks nfl," and the other, "F--k it NFL. Fine me and use the money to pay the regular refs," were pure frustration at having lost the game to the Seattle Seahawks, likely due to a missed call … Read more

Why Cowboys.com is only for a certain kind of cowboy fan

Save a horse, ride a cowboy.

Isn't that how the song goes?

I wonder what song is being sung these days at the heart of the Dallas Cowboys after learning that Cowboys.com, a site the team could once have owned, is now sporting men in very different uniform.

In 2007, the team suddenly realized it didn't own Cowboys.com. So it made a bid at auction. The bid was "275."

As Deadspin reports it, team officials thought this meant, well, $275. As opposed to the actual $275,000. The deal fell apart over this "… Read more

Arcade football games for iOS

We're now in the second week of the NFL football season, and if you're a fan of the game you probably already know when and where you're going to watch your favorite team play this weekend. But when it's not game watching time in the middle of the week, or even at halftime, these are some great games that make you a part of the action without getting too involved.

There are full American football game options at the App Store like Madden NFL 12 and Gameloft's NFL series, but neither are nearly as good as what you would find on a console and the touch-screen interfaces leave a lot to be desired. That's why instead of talking about those games here, I went with easier to pick up and play arcade-like football games that won't keep you glued to your iPhone for a long time.

This week's collection of iOS apps let you focus on playing as specific players on a football team. The first focuses on running, letting you dodge tackles, and even showboat as you run into the end zone. The second lets you play as a kicker, sending the football through the goal posts or trying to get the perfect punt right by the goal line. The third puts you in the shoes of a quarterback as you swipe to make perfect passes to moving receivers.… Read more
