Samsung today showed off its answer to the Nokia N95 with the Samsung SGH-G800. Offering a 5-megapixel camera and a 3x optical zoom, a Xenon flash, face detection and image stabilization, the SGH-G800 is a powerful shooter on paper (we have yet to test its image quality). Its slider design also mimics the N95, but unlike the recent North American version of the Nokia handset, the SGH-G800 has a lens cover. And on the whole, it actually looks like a camera, while the N95 was definitely a camera phone.

Better than peanut butter and chocolate: the N95 and a Slingbox.

If you've spent the money for the Nokia N95, a Slingbox is a must get. The company bought live spots on my program on KGO Radio months ago. My job was to read the copy, not test it. And from the commercials, to be honest, I wasn't totally sure what it did and how to use it.

Part of my problem with the Nokia N95 is everyone who has one is in love with it. I like it, but not as much as my friends do.

This is minor, but know what drives me crazy? When you get a call, there's no finger bar to grip when you move the slider up like on the Motorola z3 or the Samsung G600. So, there's always a slight lag before I get it right. And as I wrote in the first part, the spring mechanism is on the soft side.

Second only to the iPhone in hype, the Nokia N95 has finally made it to the U.S. And like the iPhone, there's lots to like, some negatives, and the same qualified recommendation from me so far.

The mp3/video player is strong, the 5-megapixel camera is outstanding, the GPS is superb, call quality is perfect, the display is clear, the feel is balanced...so where's the downside?

Today I went to the San Francisco CTIA show, which makes the odd presumption that one show can be both an enterprise and entertainment showcase. I just went for the latest. Two cell phones immediately attracted my interest; Palm's Centro and Nokia's N95 8GB. I'll be testing them in the next week or two.

Reuters and the Nokia Research Center have announced that they are working on a joint project to enable journalists to file and publish stories and multimedia news content from handheld devices instead of computers. Called Reuters Mobile Journalism, the initiative relies upon connecting peripherals to Nokia's high-end N95 device--a Bluetooth-enabled keyboard, a small tripod for video interviews, and a microphone that can plug into the mobile handset--as well as software to make it easier to put together text, images and streaming media.
