A key part of Google's plans to build the future of its Chromecast dongle has slipped into place as the company unlocked its Chromecast software development kit on Monday morning.
The Google Cast Software Development Kit (SDK), available now, will allow app developers to give their users the option to stream their apps or Web sites to the Chromecast, which acts like a receiver that you plug into your TV's HDMI port. Web site compatibility only works in Google Chrome via extension, also available today.
The Cast SDK has been available previously only in restricted form, with Google … Read more
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- The Chromecast was never part of the Google's [X] division, but that doesn't mean that the company will let you see the living room test lab set up here for Chromecast evaluations. At least, it's not likely without a hefty nondisclosure agreement.
As described by Chromecast's vice president of product management, Mario Queiroz, the faux living room has all the trappings you'd expect. There are couches, televisions, and, in typical user experience lab fashion, a one-way window through which Google experts can evaluate how participants are getting along with Google's … Read more
Motorola has sweetened the deal a bit more for buyers of its Moto X.
After reducing the Moto X's off-contract price last week, the Google-owned handset maker announced Thursday that it would throw in a free Chromecast wireless video-streaming dongle with purchases of the off-contract handset. The deal, which runs through January 14, can be claimed on the $399 16GB and $449 32GB models.
The deal is an apparent attempt to get both devices in more consumers' hands. After a muffed Cyber Monday promotion that offered the Moto X for $349 resulted in a do-over, the company has been … Read more
The popular Chromecast dongle from Google, which costs $35 and allows consumers to turn their "dumb" TVs into Smart TVs through the HDMI port, will soon have a competitor.
Netgear on Monday announced the NeoMediacast HDMI dongle, a device that, like the Chromecast, connects to a television's HDMI port and provides access to applications. Netgear's technology uses the Android SDK to allow developers to create applications for the device.
However, unlike Chromecast, which is targeted at consumers, the NeoMediacast has television service providers in its crosshairs. Netgear plans to start selling the dongles to service providers … Read more
Chromecast is the iOS app for Google's newest device, the Chromecast streaming video receiver. The app works in tandem with the device, which plugs into any HDMI port on a TV. The result is that your iPhone or iPad can subsequently stream video to your TV. While there are more options with the desktop or laptop version of the app, it is very cool to be able to send video directly from your mobile device to your TV.
Once the installation process for your Chromecast device is complete, you can use any device with the app installed on it … Read more
2013 was a busy year for the Android ecosystem: phones got bigger, faster, and more robust. Tablets grew numerous, and Android moved into electronics like smartwatches and a gaming device. Looking ahead to next year we should expect the same trends to continue, but on a slightly different trajectory.
Android will likely have a decent showing at the Consumer Electronics Show with announcements from a handful of hardware makers. Jumping ahead to February and Mobile World Congress (MWC), things should start to heat up for the next generation of Android. While this may sound like business as usual, 2014 will … Read more
Google has big plans for its surprise hit Chromecast to take it far beyond its status as a low-cost, limited-function dongle for streaming media.
The company wants to make it available to an international audience, Mario Queiroz, Google's vice president of product management, told GigaOm on Friday. Fans of the device will be "pleasantly surprised," he said.
As more people are able to get the device, Google expects that they will want more apps to be compatible with it, Queiroz said. That requires finalizing and opening the Chromecast Software Development Kit (SDK), which the company hopes to … Read more
