Sometimes a gadget comes along that sweeps you off your geeky feet. Also, it's not very often that a curiously upholstered SUV comes along and crashes into the podcast like a wrecking ball. Today we bring you all of the above in one episode.

Kids find Nintendo yummier than Oreos, M&Ms

Kids may gobble up junk food, but it seems they love playing with Nintendo devices even more.

Out of the 100 most loved brands for America's children and tweens, the Nintendo Wii and DS scored the first and second spots, according to a report by research firm Smarty Pants.

The survey "Young Love" found that even tempting snacks like Oreos and M&Ms trailed behind the Nintendo gear, taking the third and fifth spots in the list, respectively. Other techie items loved by 6- to 12-year-olds included the iPod at number 12, Sony's Playstation at … Read more

Sparse pattern-making program

Cutter allows users to create basic patterns for shoulder and waistline garments. Although it does create patterns as promised, it offers little guidance along the way.

The interface is sparse and somewhat intuitive. The program's functions are somewhat obvious just by virtue of the fact that there are so few of them. You choose what kind of garment you want (jacket, pants, dress, and so on), enter the measurements of the person it's being made for, and the program creates a printable pattern. The built-in Help file is brief, and though it does offer helpful tips for measuring … Read more

Fancy pants headed to Afghanistan

Afghanistan is a rugged country. How rugged is it? It's so rugged the U.S. Army has commissioned special pants for soldiers fighting there.

The new Army Combat Pants are designed to take whatever Takur Ghar and other Afghan mountain ranges have to hand out, according to the Army.

The new pants feature built-in hard knee pads that adjust up or down and side to side. They are made from 7.3-ounce, fire-resistant twill, (compared with the 6.5-ounce stuff soldiers are wearing now) and sport a reinforced, stretchable seat, perfect for glissading after the jihadis. Larger cargo pockets … Read more

Inside CNET Labs 44: Get yourself a boombox and pull up your pants

We start off with probably the weirdest opening ever. Where was I going with that? Your guess is as good as mine.

That opening sets the tone, though, since we jump right into Dong's promised dating advice from last week that's completely full of fail. Seriously, don't try this at home, or on the street.

There are bad segues and then there are bad segues. This one here is probably the worst ever, and we deliver it to you, unedited, raw, real. Real dumb.

From fail dating advice, to fail segues, to something that is potentially full … Read more

Cordarounds keep bikers in bright sight on light nights

Cycling commuters are forced to deal with a million obstacles on the ride to and from work. In urban areas, cars remain our biggest foe, largely because people don't make the effort to look out for our blinking lights. Plenty of companies offer cycling-specific clothing, but they're terribly unflattering in all the wrong places.

But check this out: Cordarounds has developed these Bike to Work Pants. The inside of the pockets and pant cuffs are actually made from a material that reflects lights, thus increasing a cyclist's visibility and safety.

In "daytime mode," the pants … Read more

DIY hacker sews keyboard into shants, redefines touch-typing

We've seen keyboards integrated into pants before (in this edition of DO NOT CRAVE), but we're willing to give it another chance because Brooklynite Zach Hoeken actually made these himself.

Zach spawned the keyboard pants idea at Sunday's Fashion Hacking Day sponsored by NYC Resistor, a collective that brings hackers together to share knowledge and collaborate on creative projects. Instead of throwing away a flexible silicone keyboard he had lying around the house, he decided to cut it in half and sew it onto a pair of shants.

Hoeken lists the required tools and outlines a basic … Read more

Lazy Sunday tablecloth pants: Kid-tested, slob-approved

I know these are still in beta, and I'm all for silly fashion statements, but I have to take a second to expound on the ridiculousness of these "Lazy Sunday Pants."

To the layman, these pants by Spanish design studio Mitemite appear to be your normal pair of loungey sweatpants, perfect for wearing outside to wash the car or get a quick bite at a local McDonalds, right?

Nope. Take a look again, but this time use your lazy eye. The pants come with their own built-in remote control pocket, and that's not even the best … Read more

The 404 222: Where we're getting new pants

On today's show, The 404 proudly announces it's most famous guest ever...Shaun White, snowboarding gold medalist and pop culture personality, will come on next Friday to talk about his newest video game. In other news, Firefox unveils a new "private viewing" mode, a son goes Christian Bale on his mother after she deletes his MySpace, and Wikipedia asks for donations.

Dan the Mantern here. Don't ask us how it happened, but Shaun White, yes the Flying Tomato, will join us for next Friday's show. Rolling Stone dubbed White "the coolest kid in America." We can't wait to ask Shaun about the notorious snowboarder-skier rivalry, his favorite video games, and how he's enjoying his stay in the Big Apple. We're going to be doing a lot of work to prepare for Shaun and make sure he'll be comfortable. We've ordered about 20 cubic feet of fake snow and we're installing a gondola between Jeff and Justin's chairs. Now, where to put that jacuzzi full of snow bunnies...

Don't forget: keep sending in that Little Big Planet and MotorStorm box art for a chance to win a copy either game. Also, if you make a 404 Wikipedia page, we might find it in our hearts to hook you up with a copy of Resistance 2. Cheers!
