Microsoft cancels Courier tablet project

According to sources familiar with the matter, Microsoft has cancelled Courier, the folding, two-screen prototype tablet that was first uncovered by Gizmodo.

We're told that on Wednesday, Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer Microsoft execs informed the internal team that had been working on the tablet device that the project would no longer be supported. Courier had never been publicly announced or acknowledged as a Microsoft product.

Microsoft finds its innovation mojo

Microsoft is a bit like Tiger Woods at the moment--industry darling that became too dominant, then had a fall accompanied by a thick layer of schadenfreude, and now is trying a come-back. Microsoft is being replaced in the big-bad-wolf department by Google and Apple and finds itself in the odd position of being an underdog, and people love to root for underdogs. ARM expects tons of iPad-type devices

I'm among the many who will purchase an iPad on April 3. I'm not some huge Apple fanboy, but I did have a hand in a successful iPhone app last year and plan on creating more this year. I'll need an iPad to test it out and show it off.

More details leak on Microsoft's 'Courier'

More details of Microsoft's rumored dual-screen "Courier" tablet emerged on Friday, including a rumored ship date of later this year, according to a post on Engadget.

According to the Web site, the product will ship later this year, is roughly 5 inches by 7 inches when closed, runs a version of the Windows CE operating system, and uses an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor.

A Microsoft representative declined to comment on Friday.

LAS VEGAS--Ahead of Microsoft's keynote on Wednesday, I had a chance to sit down with Entertainment and Devices head Robbie Bach to get his thoughts on some of the hottest topics in tech.
