Apple's New iPad

First new iPad finds Australia buyer

Apple's latest iPad is now out in the world--Australia, to be specific.

The buyer of the very first new iPad is one David Tarasenko, who snagged the white 64GB iPad Wi-Fi + 4G model at a midnight launch at the flagship Telstra store on George Street in Sydney.

Along with Australia, the new iPad will initially be sold in--this is the worldwide chronological order, more or less--Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore (see photos at end of post), Germany, Switzerland, France, the U.K., and the U.S., along with Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Sales are set to … Read more

Now Amazon wants your old iPad the most

As we wait for the new iPad to hit stores, Amazon is happy to take your older Apple tablets off your hands for a big chunk of Amazon credit.

For a while, eBay's Instant Sale site was offering the chance to lock in what seemed like top dollar for older generation iPads--up to $475 for a top-of-the-line 64GB iPad 2 with 3G. But Amazon is willing to pay out $320 for even a basic 16GB iPad 2 (in excellent condition), so long as you're willing to give it all back by spending it with the online retailer.… Read more

iPad's display is cutting edge--and a challenge for manufacturers

The new iPad's display is so avant-garde that Apple could have trouble keeping up with demand if it exceeds recent iPad 2 levels, according to a display analyst.

Cutting-edge tech: It's gratuitous at this point to say that the new iPad's 2,048x1,536 display is by any measure amazing--boasting a resolution typically found on large 24-inch class desktop displays.

Exactly how this is achieved is explained in a NPD DisplaySearch discussion about how Super High Aperture technology--by increasing aperture ratio--allows Apple to squeeze four times the number of pixels into the new display compared to the … Read more

New iPad comes with 1GB of RAM, report says

Lost amid the talk of Apple's new iPad yesterday was a mention of how much RAM the device features. But a new report claims to have the answer.

Apple's new iPad comes with 1GB of RAM, according to The Verge, citing sources. Although Apple has not confirmed that claim, it would make sense. Apple's first iPad launched with 256MB of RAM onboard. The second iPad bumped that figure to 512MB of RAM. If history is to be our guide, this time around, Apple's new iPad should come with 1GB of RAM.

At 1GB of RAM, the … Read more

So you think you're a home game console now, do you iPad?

If Apple wants to go after the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 then Apple should make a home console. The iPad is not a home console. It's a portable tablet that can play casual games. The same way an automobile is not a cup holder. It can just hold your coffee while it gets you from point A to B.

It would be just as silly if Microsoft or Sony came out and said their controllers have 15 times the button-pressing capability than the new iPad. They wouldn't be wrong, but it would cause every eye in the house to roll. So here's why Apple's jab at the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 was misleading and cheap.… Read more

Do yourself a favor, get AppleCare+ for the new iPad

If you were one of the millions following along today (hopefully on CNET's Live Blog) as Apple released its latest iteration of the iPad and have now decided you must buy it, be sure to add AppleCare+ to your order (pricing has not yet been made available).

Your new iPad will get one year of hardware coverage against manufacturer defects and malfunctions. That means, if your hard drive dies, some of your … Read more

Will you buy the new iPad? (poll)

Finally, the rumor mill (and our heads) can stop spinning for a little while, as Apple officially introduced the new iPad in San Francisco today.

Due out on March 16 with preorders starting today, the iPad HD ushers in a handful of improvements. As many expected, the iPad 2's successor now features a 9.7-inch Retina Display with a 2,048x1,536-pixel resolution. With four times the pixels on the tablet's display, you need more power, and Apple gave us just that, as its new A5X chip promises to deliver four times the graphics performance. … Read more
