On the backside of the Roadmate 6230T-LM DashCam, you'll find a 120-degree wide-angle camera that watches the road ahead waiting for the integrated G-sensor to detect sudden motion or speed changes. In the event of sharp braking, rapid acceleration, excessive cornering, or sudden impact, the camera automatically captures video of the event. Because the camera is constantly recording on a continuous loop, it is also able to grab video from the moments preceding … Read more
LAS VEGAS -- Garmin just announced the HUD+ at CES 2014. It's a new version of its Head-Up Display, but judging by the photos and the lack of any announced new features, the only thing that appears to have changed is the price.
The HUD's hardware doesn't appear to have changed at all since I reviewed it in late 2013. Its bright green LED display still projects turn-by-turn directions, speed, lane guidance, and other relevant navigation data onto a transparent windshield film or an attached reflector lens and into the driver's line of sight.
The addition … Read more
LAS VEGAS -- The new Dash Cams aren't the only Garmin product announced at CES to feature cameras. Nestled within the updated 2014 series of Nuvi GPS navigators, the Nuvi 2798LMT debuts as the first Nuvi to feature a wireless backup camera.
The Nuvi 2798LMT starts off with a massive 7-inch screen and boasts Garmin's outstanding navigation software with features that I've enjoyed on its latest flagship navigators, including voice-activated destination entry, free lifetime traffic and maps, and Active Lane Guidance with voice prompts. It also features Garmin Real Directions, which calls out landmarks in the turn-by-turn … Read more
With the market for portable navigation devices shrinking, Garmin is constantly looking for new, clever ways onto your dashboard. Rather than tell you where to go, Garmin's latest devices, the Garmin Dash Cam 10 and 20 announced Monday at CES 2014, aim to document events and accidents along the way.
The Dash Cam affixes to the windshield with a suction cup mount and is powered by the car's 12-volt power system, automatically springing to life when the engine is started and shutting down when the car does. A wide-angle HD camera points out of the windshield at the road ahead and records a continuous loop of 1080p, 720p, or WVGA video onto its included 4GB microSD card. Up to 32GB memory cards are supported, should the user want more space to store more incidents or increase the length of the recording loop. … Read more
Many drivers find the navigation apps on their phones work better and are more up-to-date than those built into their dashboards, yet relying on a handset for turn-by-turn directions can be inconvenient and even dangerous. Honda hits the sweet spot with its new HondaLink app, integrating navigation from the phone into a's built-in LCD.
Although different initiatives exist to emulate smartphones in the dashboard, the only example currently available from an automaker comes in the Chevy Spark and Sonic. Drivers of those models can buy the BringGo app and use it as the navigation engine, integrating it with … Read more
LOS ANGELES -- Parkopedia is to parking what Inrix is to traffic. The service helps drivers to find and navigate to parking, provides live space availability and pricing via an app or the web, and has just announced that it has been selected to provide in-dash parking information for Volvo's global automotive offerings.
Not a lot of information was given about the nuts and bolts of the Parkopedia integration in the announcement, but, earlier this year, we saw Volvo announce it would be offering its new Sensus Connected Touch interface in upcoming vehicles. This Android-powered infotainment system is based … Read more
Garmin has announced a pair of smartphone mounting kits for Android and iPhone devices that are designed to help drivers to interact with the Navigon navigation app safely and more conveniently.
The GPS hardware manufacturer and navigation software developer has really been pushing the Navigon app with its latest forays into the smartphone accessory biz. First, there was the Garmin HUD, a retro-sweet head-up display that displayed turn-by-turn directions on your windshield, but only if you used it with the Navigon app.
Snap your Android smartphone into the Universal Smartphone Mount and, if the device supports Near Field Communication, an … Read more
The Inrix XD Traffic service, launched this week, puts the company's digital traffic reporting on twice as many roads as previously. Inrix provides traffic data for in-vehicle navigation systems and through its own smartphone app.
Inrix Director of Product Management Mark Pendergrast told CNET that, along with the increased coverage, XD Traffic increases what it calls resolution of traffic coverage down to 800-foot increments. Previously, Inrix and other companies have used mile-long blocks, reporting the same traffic flow conditions for an entire stretch of road. The new 800-foot resolution makes it more likely the actual traffic conditions will match … Read more
Google Glass wearers may want to think twice before wearing their high-tech specs behind the wheel, at least in California.
Cecilia Abadie said she was ticketed by a police officer for wearing Google Glass while driving through the sunny West Coast state. The exact line as written on the ticket said: "Driving with Monitor visible to Driver (Google Glass)."
Abadie said the actual law tells drivers not to "drive a vehicle equipped with a video monitor, if the monitor is visible to the driver and displays anything other than vehicle information global mapping displays, external media player (MP3), or satellite radio information."… Read more
Update: A Mercedes-Benz spokesperson confirmed to CNET that the new C-class will integrate Google Maps as part of the Mercedes-Benz Apps feature, a $14 per month option.
The Mercedes-Benz C-class has come due for an update, and our first clue as to how it will look came in some new photos of the interior. Beyond simple design, however, these photos reveal some new connectivity integrated with the head unit: Google maps.
One of Mercedes-Benz's photos shows an apps screen, with an icon for Google Maps sitting next to a Facebook icon, the latter app currently integrated into models such … Read more
