'60 Minutes': Pierre Omidyar Video Transcript
>> EBay started how?
>> You know, it's -- it actually started as a hobby. I was a software engineer by training, and I was looking to learn about the web, which was a new technology in 1995 -- relatively new.
>> Did you write a program?
>> I sat down, frankly, over Labor Day weekend, 1995, and I just whipped up some code, and by Monday afternoon, Labor Day, I had the site up.
>> And what happened.
>> Well actually nothing happened. Nothing happened that day, because it was a brand new. In a matter of weeks people started posting items on the site. And -- which is of course what I was hoping for, just an experiment.
>> You make the point you didn't set out to create a business.
>> That's right.
>> You just saw it and rode with it when it was there.
>> That's right. That's absolutely right. ^M00:00:52 [ Ticking clock ]
