You know the soul of the -- fired the first volley to let the world know that he was gonna be the urban cool cousin Hyundai. What's really changed for 2012. Is under this -- Where they is to have some pretty anemic little four cylinders and -- -- to -- four speed automatic that would be familiar to the Jones when it crossed from Oklahoma bubble -- any changes -- goes up. Inside there isn't cheap and cheerful as you might imagine there's this kind of law. You've got this sort of out what pill -- center console in this car. Because we have a premium audio system you've got a great -- -- center channel speaker we've also got some tweeters up here and the remaining I think for speakers around the cabin -- -- tells you we've got the premium sound. -- based sources on this car going to be AM FMC. USB key and they've been very aggressive about putting that -- at low -- levels. How you control those systems is the -- Volvo interface and -- is basically. Your voice and -- -- it stands for this button here lets you do voice command -- hands free calling that's pretty common. Audio system and navigation and those are groundbreaking what are the -- at this price level it is. Three. And address. -- we do have Bluetooth streaming on this guy but unfortunately no meta tag information won't tell you what artist or song is playing at least not -- my Droid RAZR. As its navigation system is -- a huge screen but the big of the console so the best they could help you see we have a serious traffic right here you do have traffic information lives. The interface is common to Hyundai and -- products we've seen before. But it's simple. It's touch there's no controller to speak of and it responds quickly I like the -- -- -- it -- around -- -- -- -- -- on the -- but not -- it. The premium audio by the way is Infiniti stuff it's also got better amplification. The part of it that makes me nuts and it's not litigate your way is the fact we have these -- lights on the speakers. You can set the color to be off that's ideal. Or set it to music where they pulse mostly to the base in the music or set it to mode where they just do this -- -- independent of the music. You can change the color by pushing and the intensity with a rocker switch that off a lot of engineering for something that's pretty much useless. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- The MPG. Log -- seasonal look of the soul the sheet metals all the same but with some small changes here in the front. Bigger spotlight pockets little different say -- alien mouth -- go to the alien eyes on by the way the -- call alien zoo or alien bar depending on your point of view. And also follow these guys by LED daytime running lights front and tail lights if it's a high trim car. Okay here's the engine. Here. Way down here envelope that's a very big thing but it doesn't mean dubious of the new technology in order now they used to have some pretty -- Four -- these artists to go forward without modern technology -- based console now has direct injection which is kind of the technology in gas engines these days but -- only one point six we have a hydrogen cars highest console it's -- -- -- -- -- 64 horse under 48 foot pounds of -- -- this got up to sixteen about seven seconds. That's -- huge feet and weighs 2700 pounds I have relatives -- much MPG is good -- 2634. If you get the base car with a square -- engine you get 2735. MEG a little -- zero to sixty. I don't think it's worth it -- that one MPG games. Just keep your tires pumped up and you can do that much. I've mentioned before driving his cards right they arrive at the CNET garage for my getting I don't look at the badges at all I don't wanna know the power train is I -- gas. Because that tells me how -- it's doing its job. So when this car I think it was a two -- -- that's pretty obvious. But I wanted to edit CVG. Continuously variable transmission and -- has -- -- XP with the real skiers that's the thing. Because -- CBT isn't. A slippery thing in most cars and indecisive gearbox on this one feels that way to mean I think this eco button up here when I -- -- -- see that light. The car is really going to modulate. Exhilaration to use the least amount of gas. There's no electrical technology you're no battery region and no auto start stop that's coming in a future -- But it makes the car varied sounds like this engage -- It's still got lots of weird Huntington zone not a fan of the gearbox program because not -- -- but. There are hundreds and he is I've driven have really -- Decisive transmissions and it's a big part of a car feeling responsible. Beyond that I still Carter drive and it's -- it's firm it's not much on the tossing corners it's kind of shall we say rudimentary at least wrong but the bill quality is good all around. It seems to be bolted together pretty well it does feel it's -- Card definitely feels very -- experience. Okay it's all can be had for about 171000 in this Lux trim level -- -- where I'd start because that's where you get to the two liter motor. Unfortunately all the CNET style tech is still missing at that price point so added 2500 bucks -- to get to the exclaimed trim level. That's literally eight -- six speed automatic that you both systems are hard drive for media. Fair and the infinity sound and the output side. That -- 12300 bucks for the premium package. That we'll get you hard drive navigation at the rear view camera. Automatic temperature controlled and -- letters.

2012 Kia Soul Review
The good: The 2012 Kia Soul's uncomplicated cabin-tech interface looks and works well, while the speakers give off a fun light show. The cabin includes comfortable seating and practical cargo space.
The bad: The voice command system proved frustrating to use. The Soul's engine strains to keep up with freeway traffic.
The bottom line: Although its cabin and performance tech can best be described as basic and useful, the 2012 Kia Soul stands out from the economy-car herd with its design.
