2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec Video Transcript

-- roughly competes with the Infiniti -- the BMW five series and Mercedes 550. No pressure there. Let's jump in the -- Definitely outside there's nothing terribly exciting about the Genesis today. Nothing bad about it either it's kind of like a more evolved -- I don't mean that has a back in compliment. It doesn't have a lot of aero -- stuff bulging fender wells staggered deal sizes or any of the typical -- of an AMG here and am car. But that's okay because it doesn't want to play of that -- They would -- into the -- of the Genesis is it's quite simple it's kind of restraint part of that is because they're competing with some very elaborate cars. At a much lower price points and here's your standard head unit on all these five -- LCD. It's not touch it's all operated by this controller here which is. Kind of -- -- I drive Audi MMI family. As you could see the map resolution is really good. People want to zoom well and I'm going to get really nice tight dot resolution -- very good fonts on the actual street names themselves. But most voters can enter an address you can do that of course a couple of -- -- go to this navigation menu right here. Or you can use voice command right here on the wheel lets see how well it works. As you can see I've gotta tell stupid than I did -- navigation command mode. Even though I get the voice button while I was in navigation. That's a huge fail. Now the other issue I've got this -- is weird mishmash of back commands back Canadians are critical -- a car when you wanna go back in your crumb trail to where you work. There's a back button here but it doesn't always take you back. So I go to the radio settings here for example and I wanna go to some settings -- go over here and -- -- with my own controls. And I wanna go back to this menu on the left. You would think the back button would take -- there but only gets me halfway there. Then I gotta go do something different to go continuing back to this menu that is used in not to -- laughed. So it's a weird mix of back button. And left kick on the -- and you never really know which is which. Another problem here very complicated mess of buttons there's mapping guide on one button and -- navigation and menu on another button. I don't get no agenda driver assistance -- this -- -- kind of low tech high tech there's no blind spot technology. But there is a button over here for lane departure warning. Is an advanced technology but it's a warning it's not the kinda gets in the way and will actually get you back in your -- it was kind of a middle. The warning comes through -- in the car and I think -- -- intimacy don't go to jitters the belt as opposed to some cards that -- signal we'll others will shake the seat. Saving -- for parking there's no automatic parking technology available on this car. You've got a nice rearview camera but it doesn't do anything particularly novel but doesn't show trajectory it just gives you some distance markings and -- -- lines but again its stock as our bumper sensors around the vehicle. As you'd expect in this car one choice only on the gearbox not a manual transmission that's not where this fits. This eight speed automatic is pretty impressive that's a lot of gears and again that's gonna be very much of the top of the stack with the number of called you're gonna get -- the transmission these days and we're gonna see on the road it works pretty well. Damn proud of his motor with the big boys you know that's kind of a long way from what I'm making -- -- -- for years ago a top five liter V8. It's gotten awards for being -- -- really beautifully engineered motor and the numbers are good 429. Horsepower. 376. Foot pounds of torque. Notice the big drop off there are those two numbers because this guy is a direct injection motor but there are no super chargers or her -- on. That's relatively. Normal by today's standards. As -- mentioned direct injection of the big part of how they get to what Colorado but also how they get pretty good MPG -- this 4100 pound car. Goes to sixteen little over five seconds while delivering. Thing's EPA rating. Now while this -- competes with some German brands that offer a lot of optionally to standard all wheel drive. Does -- happen here on the Genesis again part of the cost containment strategy. Rear wheel drive only and as you can see the -- -- traditionally longitudinal -- with plenty of it in front of the axle line right here. You know when her car like this competing -- some serious German and establish an Asian competition. You've got to the basics right first. And I can report the Genesis does back. Very -- refined ride wall. You've got a sport suspension. It biases more toward comfort and -- -- that may disappoint you you're looking for some kind of a bargain AMG ride at this price. You couldn't get there along those lines of suspension of course doesn't communicate back damage -- the steering it doesn't -- it's gonna be more comfortable. Responsive Clark been extremely performance oriented -- The engine even under full load he never gets to any weird. -- dean notes that's another important win they've got to do it here because it doesn't sound like performance usually it's only just sounds like she. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- This lane departure technology is a switch over here. Only Clarkson 43. Miles an hour and above according to Hyundai. A lot of driving you don't get the assistance of it I did find though that it's pretty well calibrated in terms of when it picks up the line and decides to alert you. A lot of cars don't do all that well but it doesn't start -- a relatively high speed. -- -- of getting up to speed that's one in this car does really well in its cruiser fashion. I'm not -- -- -- in what is a big car with a pretty good amount of pounds on the whole 4100 as I mentioned. And has no problem getting about its own -- and that's because it makes its power vs pretty straightforward displacement and replace objection. As both Turbo chargers from lower Airways to introduce -- -- delay. Gets on this car goes after the luxury brands at a lower price and -- the basics. In the alone it's quite appealing but if you really wanna go hide -- CNET style you're gonna be finding some -- stuff missing. -- Okay pricing and Genesis I -- leader. 474. Delivered with the technology UC. And that's the technology you get you can't take this thing any further CNET style with the options got -- very -- Now the picture as I've shown you is one of kind of a middle ground glass half empty and half -- in terms of the kinds of tech and the sophistication of which have -- like this car has delivered.

2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec Review

The good: The 2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec is a comfortable, large sedan with an affordable price tag. The Lexicon stereo sounds great. USB and HD Radio are standard features.

The bad: The R-Spec upgrades don't really boost performance. BlueLink telematics and Bluetooth audio streaming are not available. Parts of the cabin look and feel cheap.

The bottom line: It may look like a sport sedan on paper, but the 2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec's feature additions amount to little more than a styling upgrade.
