>>Hmm. I get that feeling I've been here before. Ah, because I have. We're in a Pontiac Vibe, which is basically a Toyota Matrix. They're made on the same assembly line and they're Siamese twins. And they're both a little bit low on tech but that's the idea for an inexpensive car with good gas mileage. A lot of folks are into that and so are we. Let's check the tech. [ Music ] Now, one of the first things we look for in a car in terms of tech is the navigation system. You might be thinking, Cooley, what are you, drunk? Don't ask a Vibe, a low cost car, to have GPS DVD screen-based nav. But the Vibe used to have it. '03 and '05 model year then it went away. Huh, maybe it's because they want you to use the OnStar Turn by Turn Verbal Navigation. But, no, that's not available in this car either. Audio system on this car, you've got a Monsoon Stereo System. That's GM's brand for big watts and lots of speakers and in this case 320 watts, 7 speakers, single slot CD but it does read MP3 disks, though not WMA. AM/FM, of course, and also XM Radio is standard with a 3-month service deal then you've got to pay the bill yourself. An auxiliary jack is also standard with this head unit but there is no iPod adapter. You've just got to use this guy right here and go the old school way. Another nice thing on the Matrix/Vibe family is the frequent inclusion as in our car of a 120 volt AC outlet. You go switch right here, you hit that and then you've got a regular household wall outlet. It allows you to run things like a laptop or charge a portable media player. Powering this Vibe because it's a GT is the bigger 2.4 liter inline 4 engine. That's pretty big for an inline 4. 2.4 liters of anything should move this car fairly well. It's not a very big vehicle. And it does do that, performance is spritely. It gets around just fine. We have the manual transmission, the 5-speed manual that is based. You can also get a 5-speed automatic that is about $1000 more. Now this whole package has two missions; one practicality, the other frugality. Add a little sportiness on the side. The practical is an obvious note because this car is kind of biggish for a little car. I think it's kind of ugly but that's just my opinion. But the frugality cannot be argued with. Somewhere in the low 20 City and you're going to get a good solid 30 on the highway in most conditions. [ Music ] Let's price our Vibe. Vibe GT now, that means we get the bigger motor, front wheel drive, not all wheel drive, base 5 speed transmission, all that's a little bit under $20,000, $19,900 or so plus destination. Now we get the head unit that has most of the bells and whistles for that price. You've got the XM, the CD with MP3, AM/FM Monsoon Audio, you know. It's not the greatest thing ever but it's included and that's your only choice. You have the option of this sunroof up here, that's going to run you $700. If you want the 5-speed automatic, that's another $1000 and it may not be a bad choice for what's basically an econo box. Another $300 will get you an alarm system. That is not standard. 2009 Pontiac Vibe GT Review
The good: The 2009 Pontiac Vibe GT comes with a decent stereo system and an economical engine.
The bad: OnStar navigation in the Vibe GT isn't much better than asking a stranger for directions. iPod and Bluetooth cell phone integration aren't available.
The bottom line: The 2009 Pontiac Vibe GT lacks the cabin tech for modern entertainment and information. But its saving grace is the usable interior space and the good fuel economy.
