2008 Volvo V70 Video Transcript

>> I like that Volvo still makes a station wagon. I mean, a real station wagon, not some crossover thing. That's what this is right here -- the Volvo V70 Wagon and you can carry quite a tech payload. Let's go inside and check it out. ^M00:00:14 [ Music ] ^M00:00:22

>> Unfortunately, we got a V70 with nothing in it. But let's start with what's base. This audio system is the base unit: AM, FM, CD and auxiliary input jack, which lives down here in the console rather nicely placed on a bevel back there. You do have fair amount of audio options however. If I go over here to Menu and I've got audio settings right there, these are actually pretty cool -- look at that. Equalizer in the front and I can do my graphic equalize right there. Separate equalizer in the rear and bear in mind, this is a stock system, not upgraded. So that's a nice advanced thing. How many folks are gonna appreciate it -- I don't know. So, lets now talk about what isn't here, but I wish was. Volvo are the folks to do that wacky, slide up motorized nav that would be right here. Similarly, you could have two screens in the back right here behind the head rests. That would be the rear-set entertainment system. Single DVD player shared between them. Also has aux jacks for your portable media player. Now, continuing on the safety theme, they have a Collision Avoidance Package. Oh boy, when you get that, it's got all kinds of wacky stuff. First of all, Adaptive Cruise Control, but they've also got a distance alert technology that works even when adaptive cruise isn't engaged. It watches the distance from you to whatever is in front of you. That's a system that no one else does, as far as I know. But I've saved the best for last, the Personal Communicator. If we had it, it would be a key like this, but more elaborate. Not only letting you lock and unlock the car wirelessly, but also using heartbeat detection. It can tell you if somebody is hiding in the backseat. So, you can avoid that cheesy scene that's used in every Hollywood scary movie.

>> Ahhhh.

>> Here's one more Volvo safety cork. You know they've got those lock-outs on the back, so your kid can't unlock or open the door. Well, on the Volvo, it isn't a little lever that you just put your finger on when the door is open. It's this little port right here. You gotta peel off this plastic cap and then in there, is some kind of a tool you gotta use to rotate that a quarter turn. Well, check this out also, integrated baby booster seat. Check it out, right here. The cushion of the rear seat has a lever in front, pull that up and there's your booster, built-in, stock, just part of the car. ^M00:02:35 [ Music ] ^M00:02:40

>> And the most notable thing about this and is the powertrain to me is that I like it a lot. Good torque really meaty feeling motor. It's always got power when you need it, at least in my experience. The power goes up at a one gear box and automatic six-speed gear-tronic is Volvo's brand for it. Overall, such a very satisfying powertrain. One of the thing about this car, it feels planted -- heavy. Not the tubby way, but in a really big solid car way. That be [inaudible] is that, you know, true almost two-ton weigh, give or take. It's right around there, but it feels heavier than that. Okay, let's price the new Volvo V70, about thirty-three-two-ish your base. Navigation is gonna run you 2100 more, that rear-seat entertainment system 1800, Sirius Satellite radio is 295. The blind spot technology is 695, Collision Avoidance Pack, it is all those interesting technology is just about 1700 and the Convenience Package for 1400 gets you a power lift gate, humidity sensor and air quality system.

2008 Volvo V70 Review

Editors' rating

The good: The 2008 Volvo offers dynamic styling, practical cargo room, and a well-thought-out cabin with a decent standard audio system. Its list of available entertainment and safety tech options, which include adaptive cruise control and a coffee-break reminder system, is impressive.

The bad: On such a safety-focused car, the absence of Bluetooth hands-free calling is conspicuous. The transmission's Adaptive Shift Logic can behave illogically at times.

The bottom line: The redesigned 2008 Volvo V70 is a stylish grocery getter with plenty of get-up-and-go. Its entertainment and active safety tech options are impressive, but its lack of Bluetooth hands-free calling is a disappointment.
