>> Let me help you with a bar bet. What is Porsche's best selling vehicle, the iconic 911, the affordable Boxster, the newest to the line red hot Cayman? Nope, it's the truck. What's that all about? Let's try and figure it out. I've got a Cayenne GTS. Let's check the tech and everything else. ^M00:00:29 [ Music ] ^M00:00:34
>> Now the GTS is a notch above the standard Cayenne but nowhere near as insane as the Cayenne Turbo. It's a V8, 4.8 liter, over 400 horsepower, and it's the only V8 SUV I know of that comes with a 6-speed manual, 0 to 60 happens in 5.7 seconds with the manual that we have, a little over 6 seconds if you get the tiptronic automatic. MPG is an eye opener, 11/17 with the manual, so it's about a 14 mile per gallon ride with the manual gearbox. It gets better with the tiptronic, 13/18s. Either way, you're gonna go broke driving this thing, just deal with that. Here's our all wheel drive control. It's very simplified; push forward toward the mountain icon for off-roading; pull back toward the highway pictogram for obviously street use. This is a sport control that gets you into a more aggressive powertrain mode. Now, hold that powertrain and driveline tech if isn't enough for you, you can option PDCC. I forget what it stands for, under crazy Porsche acronym but the bottom line is it gives you active front and rear sway bars. So as you're in turn, really hitting one of this thing, it's gonna read the lean and counteract it, and prompt up that side of the vehicle. This vehicle has the older edition of Porsche Communication Management or PCM. That's this head unit here which is navigation, communication, and entertainment. This has this annoying little interface where you roll and scroll for the things. The new PCM 3.0 is a 6-1/2 inch colored touchscreen in a little different layout in terms of how the whole information interface works that I think is a much preferable option. So look for that. For more money, you can get into a Bose audio system, a 13 Neodymium speakers, better amplification, a 100-watt powered sub. Audio sources include XM satellite radio on this guy, AM/FM, no HD radio. You can upgrade to something called the Universal Audio Interface which gives you an iPod adapter, USB jack for memory sticks and other kinds of players, and of course a female aux-in jack. ^M00:02:48 [ Music ] ^M00:02:54
>> Let's talk about what this thing really promises to be -- the Porsche of SUVs. Does it really make you forget you're in a truck? Let's find out. We're here on Twin Peaks in San Francisco, home of some nice sinuous roads. Coming in to our first turn here, nice, you can almost feel that PDCC bring up the far side counteracting the lees as we get around. I'm doing a 3-2 here as I come around this turn, and that is where I start to dislike this vehicle. I've got issues with the gearbox. Clutch travel is long and that is one of the most vague, rubbery transmissions I've driven in a while. Oh man! That is a sweet chassis, another one, off camber here coming around. Boy, that engine just loves to be on cam. And that transmission just loves to be in the wrong gear. [ Background Music ] Okay, let's price this guy, Cayenne GTS base around 71,000. That's a manual consider it tiptronic. I know its sacrilege but for about 3,000 more, I might do it. I hate that gearbox. Go for the Porsche Communication Management 3.0 head unit, that's the nav, the audio, the touchscreen, the better interface, get the Bose audio upgrade. It's a winner on this car. And while you're at it, spend 95 measly bucks, the prize of what, 3/4 of a tank of gas to get the universal audio interface that gives you iPod, USB and aux-in for like no money. [ Music ]

2008 Porsche Cayenne GTS Review
The good: The 2008 Porsche Cayenne GTS is the finest-handling SUV we've ever tested, yet still retains off-road capability. Its Bose audio system produces clean and refined sound.
The bad: The Porsche Communication Management option, a unit combining navigation, stereo, and phone, represents older cabin tech. Its phone system is designed for Europe and doesn't work in the U.S.
The bottom line: It may cost a lot, but the 2008 Porsche Cayenne GTS is a high performance on- and off-road vehicle. Current cabin tech isn't great, but a new version of the Porsche Communication Management system is coming out soon.
