>> It's the Ford Taurus. It's fattier, duddier, close relation. Doesn't sound very promising right? But there are some good toys within.

>> Please choose your selection from the display.

>> The 2008 Mercury Sable Premier. Let's get in and check the tech. ^M00:00:14 [ Music ] ^M00:00:15

>> But the technology in this car is focused in one place -- Ground Zero right there, the touch screen nav -- that's optional. The Sync System: Standard on the Sable Premier. Here's where it gets interesting. Hit the Media button, and we've got the user device over here on the right. This is where we go for a little fun ride. Look at these sources, line in we've got our aux jack here in the console, that's standard stuff. Hit it again, USB -- Hello! And one more time, Bluetooth -- Bluetooth stereo. First of all you could use your USB thumb-drive full of music like I have right here and it works just great. Plays the music, shows the ID three tags. What I've got connected, check this out, is my iPod. But this car has no iPod adaptor. It does it through USB translation through the firmware that Microsoft has developed to read the iPod as if it's a true iPod adaptor, but it's going through USB. So, let's check it out. It's all there -- Album, genre, but if I had a Bluetooth stereo device, if my Treo was such a thing, I could stream music off of it in stereo in high fidelity to the head unit leaving it right up here in this little cool compartment that has one of those gummy sheets on it. Let's say you don't like all those touch screen buttons. No problem. Just talk to it and it actually works. Check it out.

>> Please say your command.

>> Source USB.

>> USB.

>> Play Cat Stevens.

>> Play artist Cat Stevens, is that correct?

>> Yes. ^M00:01:37 [ Music ] ^M00:01:41

>> And there are our gas stations. I told it I need gas for the car. It showed me where I can go to get it. The audio system in this car sounds pretty good. It's a premium cell, the label Ford has been using since I was a teenager. It's gonna have a lot of speakers. Two subwoofers on this car. Options include Sirius. You can also get a rear seat entertainment system in this car. It's a drop-down that kind of spreads across the ceiling back here with auxiliary inputs for portable players as well. It's okay, you know wires hanging down from it if you have something plugged in to the aux, but on the good side, it's an 8-inch LCD. On the bad side, that LCD is right here in the middle, right where your mirror is. And on the bad side of that, this car doesn't have a back-up camera. Powertrain on this car is very straight forward. Every Sable is the same, 3.5-liter, Duratec V-6, 4 valves per cylinder, 263 horsepower, 249 foot-pounds, ample even though it's kind of porky car, goes out to one transmission too, a six-speed automatic blessedly free of any nonsense that makes you think you're driving a race car. No shiftable gate, no paddles on the wheel. You wanna shift it? You do this. You go from drive to low. It's old school, I love it. Let's price our '08 Sable Premier. It's a high Trimmed edition, so it's already got some nice stuff in it, but it doesn't include the nav system. That's 2,000 more. Sync is built-in. By the way, if you want all-wheel drive, you can get it, but it's 1800 more. Now other tech toys would include Sirius at 200 bucks. If you wanna get rear back-up bumper sensors, that's another 300, 500 for stability control. If you want that drop-down LCD rear seat DVD system, that's about a grand. ^M00:03:12 [ Music ]

2008 Mercury Sable Review
Editors' rating
Good

The good: Sync is a top technology, giving a significant boost to the 2008 Mercury Sable. We especially like Sync in conjunction with the car's navigation system, as you get a touch-screen LCD to play with. The car also has a good emissions rating.

The bad: This Mercury Sable is not for people who enjoy driving, as its throttle response is anemic and it shows ample understeer. Its fuel economy isn't a saving grace either, as we couldn't get above 20 mpg.

The bottom line: Don't expect to enjoy the driving experience in the 2008 Mercury Sable, but it will support your phone and MP3 player, and deliver car-shaking bass, if that's what you're in to.
