2007 Mini Cooper S Video Transcript

>> Here it is, the all new Mini. Looks just like the old Mini. But there are a lot of differences. Let's check it out. ^M00:00:05 [ music ] ^M00:00:10 Whole different engine than the Cooper S. Now it used to be a supercharged motor, hence the S. It's still called an S, but now it's a T. Turbocharged motor. 1.6 liter, 4 valves per cylinder, 172 horsepower, 191 on the foot pounds. Moves this little thing rather sharply. Base transmission is this 6 speed manual source from Gitrad [assumed spelling]. There's also a 6 speed automatic that has Agitronic shift paddles on the wheel. Here's a question, do you figure they color key all these little things? Now inside the Mini Cooper, you're really not entering a car, you're entering Casa De Quirky. Everything in here is a little bit odd and not like any other car made. It's part of the whole mini thing. First of all, you've got the center mounted pod tachometer there, which also includes a pretty standard BMW trip computer. That means the speedometer's over here. Oh, can't miss it, size of a dinner plate. Great big thing there with a very odd stylized fuel meter, which is actually looking kinda like a daisy, very 60's. Now this radio is a BMW piece we've seen before in some of the, some of the 3 and 5 series cars. It's been called the business radio in some of those vehicles. It's a base unit in BMW. It's a good unit here in the Mini Cooper. You see it's got a variety of sources inside of this interface. We have an aux jack or actually aux jack is hidden way underneath the console here, cd refers to in the base configuration, a single slot that will play MP3, WMA and standard cd's, 6 speakers basic, 10 speakers if you go for the upgraded audio system which we're enjoying here, which includes satellite radio. Sirius only. Incredibly expensive option. 950 bucks to put Sirius Radio on this thing. How come? Because this one comes with a lifetime subscription. I don't think any other car company does that and it's tied to the vin number of the car. So wherever the car goes as you resell it, the lifetime Sirius subscription goes with it. That's interesting because, you better like Sirius and you better hope it's gonna be around forever. I would wish they'd offer a monthly option as well, but they don't. And of course we have a tuner selection, which in this case is AM/FM, but also adds HD radio reception. You've got an option for that right here. It says IBOC, that's in band on channel. Other toys you can option up on your Mini Cooper S would include a navigation system that kinda cuts the heart out of the speedometer and lives right in there and you end up with the fringe being the speedo and the nav unit's right in the middle. It's actually kinda cool, though we didn't get a chance to check it out for function. Our vehicle doesn't have it as you can see. Here's the world's strangest looking car key. Now the basic one is a typical wireless to open the doors and such, you press a button and you rack it in there to start the car and then hit the start stop button to turn the engine on or off. But there's also an upgraded version called convenient access. That is totally touchless. So you leave that in your pocket and you can start the car, access all the systems, you know how that deal works. By the way, if you get the basic car key, it has to go in there to charge. Now your base Cooper S today prices out at 21,200. Major options include that trick navigation system inside the speedo for 2100 more, Blue Tooth 600, Sirius as I mentioned, 950 with lifetime sub, HD radio's 500. If you want the automatic tranny that's 1350 and you've got another 500 bucks if you want that touchless key technology. ^M00:03:23 [ music ]

2007 Mini Cooper S Review

Editors' rating

The good: The engine in the 2007 Mini Cooper S accelerates well and brings in good fuel economy. Its automatic transmission is surprisingly good, while the standard audio system delivers rich sound. And you can't beat the Mini's looks.

The bad: We can find very little wrong with the Mini Cooper S, but as a minor critique, it only fits a single CD player in the dashboard. A six-disc changer is optional, but its mounting area probably won't be terribly convenient.

The bottom line: Good-looking and one of the most fun cars on the road, the 2007 Mini Cooper S is well-engineered throughout. While we were impressed by the audio and handling, these can be made even better with an optional premium speaker system and a limited slip differential.
